The misuse in recent weeks of Thucycides’ Melian Dialogue- the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must- annoys me. The treatment of the Melians - murdered and enslaved - prompted small Greek city states to band together with Sparta and ultimately defeat Athens. That’s the lesson.

Hi! Aerosols cause the halo of scattered light around the Sun and the Moon. This halo interferes with #earthshine studies where we try to neasure Earth’s #albedo - for use in improving climate models :) Aerosols are important in many ways! 🧪
I work in the global modeling group and help with the incorporation of sat obs into the model. This process is known as data assimilation. The goal is provide observational truths to improve forecasts and climate simulations. Many models already assimilate weather data (temps and winds).

It works if the goo was down with trapped expanding air above the goo, not otherwse.
Holiday travel tip: to keep liquid toiletries from exploding on the plane, squeeze excess air out of bottles/tubes before closing the lids, then put them in a ziplock bag, and squeeze the excess air out of that, too, before sealing. I know from experience it works, can any scientist tell me why? 🧪

Where I live in Waynesboro, VA there is a recycling center. When I asked about the glass, I was told it was used as intermediate cover in the landfill, so not recycled!
