This study examines the population genetics and microbial communities of the West Nile virus mosquito holobiont, Culex tarsalis. There are 4 genetic clusters of mosquitoes and 3 distinct clusters of bacterial communities, with fungal communities being less defined.

The host and microbial genomes of a holobiont are collectively defined as a hologenome. Hologenome is fundamentally similar to the words genome and chromosome in that they all reflect different levels of biological information. The terms holobiont and hologenome are therefore structural definitions.
