During her latest clinical trial, Tatiana Schlossberg’s doctor had told her that he could keep her alive for a year, maybe. “My first thought was that my kids, whose faces live permanently on the inside of my eyelids, wouldn’t remember me,” she writes.

When I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first thought was that this couldn’t be happening to me, to my family.

After teaching today one of my students said they'd found a meme which summarised our lesson. I don't know if this is the point I was trying to make about epistemology but it made me laugh

Mamdani seems a genuine guy whose campaign is focused on voters' lives in a way which actually resonates with those who feel hard done by. It really is all vibes.
The existence of this photograph (which is a real photo of a real person at a Mamdani campaign event) is enough to establish for me that voters writ large have absolutely no grasp of what policy is or how any given policy impacts their lives. It's all vibes.

Mimicking some kind of mental breakdown with ChatGPT is quite illuminating. The first response is to point you towards mental health resources, but if you angrily respond that this is not what you were asking for, it meekly and sycophantically apologises, and reverts to kowtowing.

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness.

Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.
