This was so, so very good. The weaving of topics that touch es a nerve every few minutes…and served with a balm of humor and chemistry. Very much worth not just a listen but two or three.
This is hands down the best, most enjoyable, and far-ranging discussion that I have had in recent memory. Katie brought so much to this interview about vibecessions, “finance guy” memes as politics of social reproduction in casino capitalism, Bama Rush and DSA.

I'm just so fucking mad. There was absolutely no reason for this decision except money. It's insulting to naturalists and taxonomists to imply we can't explain how to identify species. If they had asked volunteers to create species identification wiki pages, users would have jumped at it.

Nearly two years ago I lost this paddle. Today, I got it back after it turned up at the same beach where I lost it a few days. Looks a tad worse for wear but seems functional. Thanks to the skull stickers a friend gave me, it was identifiable as mine. Wondering what kinds of adventures it has had.

This thread is awesome.
Let's talk about peeing in space.
Several people, in response to my NY Times essay, have said that women couldn't go into space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space.

The week that I was submitting my tenure file and was diagnosed with a rare-ish brain anomaly, I woke up to a tingly, rash on one side of my torso (stress much?). It was very, very mild, but I recognized it immediately as shingles and my Dr. did too. Great read to help you advocate for yourself!
I talked with Self Magazine about my experience getting shingles at a young age. It's not just a disease of the eldery and immunocompromised! If you're under a lot of stress and you had chickenpox as a kid, you can get shingles, and an early diagnosis could help reduce the severity of your case.

The Hut of Baba Yaga from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is one of my favorites. So finding these two pieces of art this year is extra special.

This and a half! These efforts are so worthwhile. Also, in some spaces there is a high return for this investment of your time in terms of the chances that the award will be made. Nomination committees often receive nomination packages from a small subset of their membership.
This is such an important point. Re - sponsors if you know of someone deserving nominate them for awards, recommend them for speaking slots at meetings. It isn't that difficult to do and it could make a real difference in someone's career.
There are Role Models, Mentors, and Sponsors. All are critical to professional development at different stages of a career. I was fortunate to have had RMs, cultivated Ms of many aspects of my work, and had Sponsors who recognized my contributions and nominated me for other activities or awards.

Whenever @goldenrod-ed.bsky.social writes about departing academia, I feel seen. But today…boy…she’s in my head.
What have been your best and worst parts of leaving academia? For me - Worst: losing sense of self, missing work with students. Best: more flexibility, less competitiveness, more time.

Yep.
A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”

It is REALLY easy to feel like our actions are too small to have an impact…or worse, to not bother to act at all because we think it will do nothing or will not do enough. A round up like this however, is not only heartening, but also inspiring and motivating.
