The Wheel of Power and Control is a tool for understanding domestic violence, but what can it tell us about the violence we are seeing in the streets of Chicago? Sign up for our mailing list to find out in our upcoming Monday newsletter. #DVAM
Time and time again survivors show us that police intervention is not, and never has been an accessible option to survivors across the city of Chicago. To adequately fight against gender-based violence, we must invest in community-based solutions.

#AlternativesToPolicing
...It felt like the police didn’t care what this man did to me - I should’ve been able to stay in my house but by telling me to move into a shelter, it felt like they took his side instead of mine”.
When asked why #PeerToPeer solutions are important to her, HTA Survivor-Leader Dianne said “If I could go back in time, I would’ve wanted another peer like me intervening instead, because I felt like the police were not there for me..."

Join us and many more community organizations on Tuesday October 7th at 12 pm at Daley Plaza! 💜 Together we will be distributing materials and resources, and showing soliarity for all survivors during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We hope to see you there!

#DVAM
We are already at over $9000! All donations will directly go to an HTA survivor-leader.

You can donate and share our drive at the link in our bio. We deeply appreciate your solidarity and support in this critical moment for survivors.

Our goal is to provide $500 to each HTA survivor-leader by 9/26 so they can receive support for basic expenses, like groceries and rent. HTA has redirected all of our event sponsorships and ticket sales, and we are asking the HTA community to help us close the gap to reach our goal of $21,000.

True solidarity means that no one gets left behind and everyone’s safety and well-being matters, which is why we pivoted our in-person fall event to virtual last night which launched a mutual aid drive to support our community of survivor leaders.

Survivor-leaders with HTA are calling on the City to fund peer support programs. Chicago has seen success in decreases in other forms of violence through community initiatives -- it's time to invest in the same solutions for gender-based violence.

From our Co-Director Sheerine Alemzadeh's published Letter to the Editor in the @chicago.suntimes.com: "Increased ICE raids are a recipe for further silencing already terrified survivors, giving them nowhere to go and no one to call without risking their safety and freedom."
*Take Action*
1. Provide public comment at City Council's subject matter hearing on September 24 (link in bio)
2. Ask your Alder how they plan to fund the Department of Family Support & Services at $40M as requested under the 2026 City of Chicago Budget Gender-Based Violence Task Force proposal

There is a crisis of #GBV impacting our community - everyone deserves #PublicSafety. We don’t just need to stay afloat - we need more resources.

City Council needs to invest $40M in gender-based violence non-police based initiatives, including survivor-led peer-to-peer intervention models.

When she called the police in April, officers warned her the report would go to ICE and told her not to file in person. “If he were to hurt me again, I don’t think I could report it, because that’s where my story would end,” she said. fiercebymitu.com/news/ice-sur...

Survivors of gender-based violence do not need more barriers, more threats, or more challenges as they navigate an already complicated road to justice and healing. ICE’s presence at Cook County’s domestic violence courthouse is especially frightening and cruel. (1/2)

The arrests near the facility at 555 W. Harrison St. come as residents and politicians brace for a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Chicago.

NEW: A federal court again ruled the Trump administration violated the terms of our family separation settlement and must take specific steps to remedy it by ensuring that families hurt by this cruel policy can access the services they need.

GBV affects the entire community. A survivor is not just a survivor. They are a caregiver, a partner, a neighbor, a colleague, a friend.

Our communities suffer from the ripple effects of violence. But we can demand more–more safety, more services, more prevention–from our city.
