The city just laid off 300 people. "Zero means zero" etc. But ok let's have a $2 million one-night show.

Honestly the dumbest thing about this is that the funding shortfall for the Celebration of Lights - for 3 shows - was about $650k

Great start working towards my yearly distance goal. Crucially, I didn’t overdo it, but enjoyed my running and felt good doing it. Onto the next month! #running #runchat #strava

The responses of Canadian sports fans to Ilya Kharun's change of allegiance are also an illustrative example of the intersection between sport & politics. Look at those responses and compare them to the responses to Mark Carney's speech at Davos... 🧵
People are going to be mad about this regardless, but worth stating a couple of facts:
1. Cdn HP sport has been chronically underfunded for decades.
2. Olympians are full-time athletes. You can’t pay your bills with patriotism.
3. Cdns must either put more $$ into sport or be ok losing athletes.
Ilya Kharun, who earlier this week announced he’d be leaving Canada to swim for USA, just released a 5-minute video explaining his decision.

He says he wasn’t getting any brand deals, has always lived in America and it was strictly business.

Kharun thanked Canada a number of times.

This is a phenomenal piece of historical analysis that draws from the writings of people involved in the making of BC in the 19th century. As a life-long British Colombian, I have a couple of takeaways on the theme of “this is who we are”… 🧵

Unfortunately, the answer is every successful show on an American network. The networks are so dependent on ad revenue that they will insist on running it back until the audience hates the show.
Name a TV show that overstayed it's welcome

Big call and correct decision to disallow Czechia’s goal with minutes remaining in the WW18 bronze medal game. The attacking player is on a path directly into the crease, makes no attempt to avoid, and clears the goalie out of the way of the puck. Good call by the officials #reftalk #iihf

There’s so much to unpack about this. One thing that sticks with me is the different ways in which @zeets.bsky.social captures the physical manifestation of the pain of migration and being othered; both within the family unit and society as a whole.

Inspired by @zeets.bsky.social’s reflection on Knives Out, I took a crack at explaining why these movies stand out so starkly against the media/artistic landscape of the last few decades and what it means to take the consulting detective back to its roots.

Jim Shepard’s narrators end up in the worst possible situations — due to their own inadequacies and reasons outside of their control — but rather than being angry, they simply sit in their pain. They are not ‘flashy’, like many (anti-)heroes, but they more closely represent all of us.

It feels like there’s been a conscious effort by (some) heads of int’l sport federations to position themselves as something akin to a head of state. Except they don’t want to do any of the uncomfortable parts — i.e. representing the interests of their constituents — it’s just about status.
At the World Athletics Cross Country Championships press conference, the first reporter to be called on asks a question about visa access, which is on many people's minds and gets a mild scolding from World Athletics president Sebastian Coe for asking.

From the club perspective, I understand this. When you're good, the salary cap monster necessitates hard decisions.

I'm more surprised that Ahmed wanted this move... going to a bad team (and a worse team than the Caps) in a very rough league six months before the World Cup. #CanMNT

Whew... will need some time to process this one. Not an easy read but well worth it, as it's generating a flood of my own questions around deconstructing systems of power, not only as they relate to young people, but to all of us. Thank you @lalouverouge.bsky.social #booksky

It’s still worth reminding people that “narco-terrorist” doesn’t mean anything. It’s a recently-invented term that US gov’t is using as shorthand for ‘people without rights’.

Push back against this dehumanizing language wherever you see it. It is literally a threat to global security.

For the first time since 2023, I'm setting a yearly distance goal. Although I am not quite where I want to be physically, I am feeling better than I have in years, which is making me excited to work towards 1200km for the year. #running #runchat #strava

This week, I’m seeing a lot of ads for the Brick and what I find interesting is that — as an adult — my phone isn’t the problem.

The problem is needing to understand my own habits/hang-ups and taking steps to make it easier to do positive things (read, yoga, do work) rather than just scroll.
