My dad bought a house in Accrington for £17,000 in 1992.

Sold for £135,000 in 2022 (!).
My dad bought a house in Acton in the 1970s for £5K 😬 (sold in the 70s as well so...). He was a teacher.

Great illustration of the austerity ratchet in Britain - restoring the pre-Osborne welfare state treated like wild-eyed radicalism
Aside from anything else, the benefit cap was introduced in 2013. Claiming that going back to 2012, to a benefit system designed by Tories but missing some of the most egregious and punitive excesses, is a sign of a "return" to even the real 1970s let alone the media boogeyman 1970s, is bollocks.

“I bought this house when it was only 300k and now it’s worth 2m, why should I have to leave because I can’t afford a tax???” - so you’re saying you’ve made over a million quid in profit off a house just by it existing and you’re now complaining that’s getting taxed a bit

All of this “woe is me my house is now really expensive and so a tax is unfair” stuff completely negates to acknowledge the implicit fact that the house owner has made an insane profit by doing absolutely nothing
Mumsnet is already on the case.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE LONDONISTAN, LEAVE!

no but seriously, this is bang-on-da-monehhhhhhhhhhh

get to FOOk wit your "profit" - get a REAL job xoxo
especially if you weren’t born in London using the inflated market inflating it more then slinging your hook and moving to the shires with a tidy profit doesn’t seem particularly fair !

my british grandparents (born 1903) welcomed a Black caribbean migrant as their daughter in law
In 1971, 1 in 3 NHS doctors were overseas born

Given the avg patient age, those born in the 1890s were quite likely to meet a migrant doctor

Whatever some commentators born in the 60s/70s/80s say, most ppl (incl their grandparents) regularly & positively interacted w/migrants their entire lives

There are ways of suppressing house prices but as this nation is fucking obsessed with them no government will
do it
Going to say something that's political suicide in Britain, but: if we insist on having "house prices" in a healthy economy it would trend towards £0 over time and not result in me looking at a house two streets down from my parents which is almost identical to theirs that costs £700,000

Look it’s never nice to find yourself in a position of having to move when you don’t want to but given that due to the volatility of the London housing market I have had to move FIVE TIMES since 2020 I’m struggling to feel very sympathetic towards people whose ’problem’ is a paid off 2mil property.

This country seems to have a bottomless well of sympathy towards asset rich pensioners and only contempt for anyone under 50 who is putting half their income into paying their landlords fourth mortgage and a big chunk of the rest into skyrocketing bills.

The 50 wealthiest families own more wealth than the bottom 50% of the population.

How can this Labour Government say this is a "cost of living" budget and refuse to tax the rich?

They care about protecting power and wealth. And cost of living is a buzz phrase for them. Dire.
