Pencil lead is actually a mix of graphite & clay! It’s called ‘lead’ because when graphite was first discovered, it was mistaken as lead and the name stuck.
Ever had to use a #2 pencil for class? The number grades the hardness of the graphite, #2 just means it’s good for writing! ✏️

They’re also important medically! Their (blue!) blood contains a particular protein used in tests for bacterial impurities in things like vaccines.
