Computers are much easier to hold to account than people

We deliberately structure companies and human systems exactly to avoid having to hold people to account
seeing this image used as an argument against driverless cars is hilarious considering the fact that we don't hold human drivers accountable for killing people unless they're exceedingly reckless (drunk, speeding, texting, etc.)

I'm thinking of resuming my series on the history of robotics, I still have ~20 unfinished draft posts from 2014 🥲

I thought this one about John Dee's mechanical beetle might be a good one for the month of October:

As someone who was alive in 1999 but not old enough to really have been aware of it, I find parables like this valuable:
It was a running joke in 1999 that you had all these doomed business models where any lay person would say, "So you're giving a way a thing that nobody will pay for at great expense to yourself while boasting it's the wave of the future just because it's online?"

I'm beyond excited to announce the release of a small publication I've been working on. The Robot Science Coloring Book is based on sketches from my own notebooks, and represents everything that originally made me interested in robotics.

Roughly 10 years ago I went to see a talk featuring the futurist author Martin Ford. I wrote up some notes afterward and saved them as a blog post that I think has become more relevant given the types of technologies that are emerging now.

👀Today’s AIs are already hyper persuasive.

A controversial study where LLMs tried to persuade users on Reddit found that: “Notably, all our treatments surpass human performance substantially, achieving persuasive rates between three and six times higher than the human baseline.”
