Wait, what? My son’s friend, traveling in China, is staying at a hotel chain called ‘James Joyce Coffetel’, and instead of a Gideon Bible, they leave a copy of Ulysses by the bedside.

Good morning! My essay on THE AFFAIRS OF ANATOL (1921), directed by the mighty Cecil B. DeMille, is up at the website for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. A beautiful restoration screened this year, letting people savor the charm of Wallace Reid and Gloria Swanson... silentfilm.org/6563-2/

I am only one episode in, but Matthew Macfadyen’s Guiteau in DEATH BY LIGHTNING is giving out a very Rupert -Pupkin vibe—two phenomenal actors doing the classic American energetic self-deluded obsession with being noteworthy and celebrated.

Ida Lupino in Roadhouse (1948). All hail the badass. She sings hauntingly, raspy, & with perfect smoky depression the classic Johnny Mercer song "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)".

I haven't seen an adaptation studies #starterpack doing the rounds, so thought I'd create it myself! One for you if you're interested in #adaptation in a cultural context in all of its wonderfully various forms. Let me know in the replies if you'd like to be added.

As a romantic (in life) and a Romantic (in college studies) I loved Del Toro's Frankenstein—the sweep, the beauty and the headlong emotion of it. Its visual and thematic echoes range from Burke & Hare to Ingres to Hammer, but it's no pastiche—it's a vividly individual film.

I want to urge anyone interested in FRANKENSTEIN to see it at a theater where the big screen will let you bask in the visuals. And do it soon after the movie opens (Oct. 17) because I don't think Netflix plans a long stay in cinemas.
I want to check this out when it comes to the Lightbox. This was made to be seen on the big screen
