“Why does it take the voice of one dead man over the voices of hundreds & thousands of living women to take accusations of violence against women and girls seriously?” Cllr Áine Groogan’s speech last night in City Hall calling for a full review of Belfast’s highest honour, the Freedom Of The City.

Belfast City Council just killed large-scale concerts at Boucher Playing Fields - with NO alternative venue lined up. Sinn Féin & DUP voted to end this without a plan. Young people lose the chance to see world-class artists in their own city.

Public honours are a statement of values. When serious abuse allegations emerge, silence becomes complicity.

Cllr Áine Groogan is calling for an urgent, transparent review of Belfast’s Freedom of the City honour.

Prestige must not outweigh survivors and history does not excuse harm.

Belfast City Council cannot continue to confer honours while survivors are re-traumatised. The Epstein Files demand action, not silence. Public institutions must not provide prestige or legitimacy to those facing serious abuse allegations.

St Brigid’s Day is about more than folklore. Brigid stood for care over greed, sharing over hoarding, and sheltering the vulnerable. She treated land, water and community as sacred. Her values still feel very relevant.
