My return to the office was met warmly by Mr Tibbles, who deigned to let me pet him with my good arm.

I told George about yesterday's visitor.

"Bertha's sent Alex and Charley on a train up to Scotland to find them," I added.

"Wish she'd sent me," he muttered.

Yesterday, after going on for hours about how he should have been the one to go to Scotland, George began hinting that we should take turns writing in MY diary.

I dropped into the stationer's on my way home and chose a nice one in brown leather for him.

I was getting myself ready for the long walk to church, when a pounding on the pub door woke everyone, Bertha included.

The woman identified herself as the mother of one of the escapees.

"He didn't do it," she wailed. "He'd already fled to the Highlands!"

Our history is a lie. The real war is for reality itself.

What if the most significant events of the 19th & 20th centuries were battles in an ancient, magical war for the fate of all creation

Great picture, Pennan 🤩
Stunningly scenery, though.
It really is a show stopper. It proves that when you plant a tree the benefit is usually for someone else. I’m grateful to whoever planted it here.

Enough of "George here"! I finally have my diary back, though he was reluctant to relinquish it. I've just been reading through his entries, and the word I used was brusque!

At last Bertha has acceded to my demands and has released the nurse and doctor and their families.

Octavius insisted on seeing Sir John. Bertha sent Charley to go with us.

I reckon the man was more interested in finding out what Octavius remembered of his attack than apologizing for sending him into danger.

Sadly, Octavius has asked for his diary back.

George again.

Today when I got to the Bucket of Blood, I overheard Octavius pleading with Bertha to release the doctor's and nurse's families and to send the pair of them home.

He clammed up like an oyster when he saw me standing there in the doorway.

I don't like that Sir John bloke one bit. When I told Octavius as much, he said he thought him broosk, which I worked out must mean "touched" or unhappy.

Still no sign of the escapees, which Bertha thinks is odd: "Ain't no one would dare to 'ide 'em from me!"
