Extinct Birds Bonus Round 10: Rock Sparrow

I decided to extend the extinct bird drawtober by doing a little bonus round of birds that are locally extinct in Germany as a way of highlighting the importance of local conservation work.

So that was Monday December 1st 2025. Crikey. Another day done, another day (more or less) here. Oh well. So it goes.

(On sale throughout this very month in 1979, just 46 years ago, the year’s Star Trek Annual, with its painted covers by Edgar Hodges.)

And so to bed. Sleep well, gentle sentients

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

All of these people who can't afford to buy books need an introduction to the public library and @gutenberg.org , which will give you more books than you can possibly read for free.

At no point have I ever been without something to read. And if I'm too broke to grab something for 99c--which has happened!--I reread what I already have. Just like I rewatch movies. Just like I replay games. I usually discover new things during rereads as well.

Huge thread from Tyche Books, a Canadian publisher. Her authors are every day folks, with bills and rent and the physical requirement to eat every day.

Stealing the books she publishes is not a progressive act. It's not activism. It's not punk.

It's just stealing from people trying to live.
Some of my authors are on disability. Some struggle to pay monthly bills. Some are retired & on limited income. Some were laid off in the past couple years & have yet to find new work. Some would love to quit the day job & write full time, but don't earn enough from royalties to do that.

Kobo Plus pays fairly! It's often half of my Kobo income.

(I don't know how audiobooks in Kobo Plus work, just b/c I'd only loaded my audiobooks there in the past month, but I assume it's the same)
Does Kobo Plus pay decently? I have it but I also buy a bunch through Kobo.

And honestly with the number of free books available at any point now, there is very little defense I want to hear from people these days.

You can sign up for deal newsletters and get offered 500 free books a day.

Just admit you want what you want when you want it & don't care about anyone else.

People who pirate books: “I just think art and literature should be FREE to everyone!”

Yes, I too would love to live in a world where art is accessible freely to all and yet artists are paid a living wage, but as this magical wagical pixie wixie land does not exist, please don’t steal from us.
