The next game comes Tuesday, when the Caps host the Lightning. I'll be in the building for the first time in what feels like forever, and hopefully we'll see this young winning streak grow by one.

Something's going to work, but more importantly, it's only been three games and two of them were wins. It's easy to be down on the Caps' play, but like we saw last year, there can be a lot to dislike while they still play winning hockey. Critique, but don't crash out. This is still a great team.

I'm glad PLD is getting mad, and I'm glad Ovechkin is too (although he's up to two assists now). There's a good few guys on this team that haven't yet played like they're capable of playing. Coach Carbery is already experimenting with personnel and line combos, and I expect that to continue.

The team as a whole has been showing lots of frustration early this season, but Pierre-Luc Dubois had the first real act-out moment, punching at the bench wall. He left a bit later with some sort of injury, hopefully nothing to be concerned with.

The Caps got one power play this game, and of course didn't do anything with it. It's officially a trend, and not a good one.

The end of the game was a good defensive stand, the beginning of the game was a good speedy start, the middle is where things kinda lagged. It's also where the goal happened, so I guess nothing matters? More research required.

Declan Chisholm got into his first game as a Capital and his hundredth in the NHL. He had to play on his off side a lot, but had really strong defensive play all game and got the secondary assist on the Beauvi goal.

Wilson took the other penalty for Washington, which was fine in my book. It was a correct call, but he did the right thing to play for the puck in the situation he was in.

While praise is going out, Anthony Beauvillier deserves some too. He had the most shots on goal, the most attempts, and of course the lone goal. The ill-timed penalty hurts, but the spin is that it gave the PK a chance to flex. Two kills in a row!

Charlie Lindgren. We know he's capable of a lot, and he showed all of it off tonight. 31 saves you could make a highlight reel out of, not counting the other dozen-plus attempts that he had to stay sharp on. He was the clear MVP for the Caps already during the second period.

There's still 79 games left to play, but I think it's safe to say this is the Charlie Lindgren game. His tenth shutout was full of heroics to keep the New York Rangers off the board, as the Washington Capitals win a game way more fun than the 1-0 score indicates. #ALLCAPS

The Capitals go into the second intermission up 1-0 on the Rangers. Beauvillier scores, Ovechkin gets his second point, Chisholm gets his first. Two penalties killed off back to back, gotta love that. #ALLCAPS

Anthony Beauvillier deserved this one going in. He's been one of the most tenacious Caps on offense tonight, with four shots on goal and more that went wide. Textbook redirection to finally get a goal on the board in this game. #ALLCAPS

0-0 after one period between the Capitals and Rangers. A bit physical, but not heated at all. The first ten minutes were solidly in the Caps' favor, the second ten were a little more muted. With Quick and Lindgren's play so far, we're probably not in for a scoring explosion. #ALLCAPS

I've liked the way the Capitals are playing so far. Not as many shots on goal as it feels like, but there's still eight on the board just ten minutes in. Passes are better, speed is night and day compared to game one, D is strong so far. #ALLCAPS

Yesterday, all 32 teams were in action. Today, the eyes of the NHL all look to Madison Square Garden.

The Washington Capitals hope to start their first winning streak of the season against the already-streaking New York Rangers. Who you got when the puck drops at 7:00 PM? #ALLCAPS

GLB's three stars of the game:

⭐️⭐️ Logan Thompson (34 SV, .944 SV%)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tom Wilson (1A, +2, 1 block, 2 hits)

Tomorrow night, same Caps time, same Caps channel. It's the New York Rangers, who have three games and two wins under their belt after taking said belt to the Penguins tonight (6-1 final). Hopefully they're having a comedown when the Capitals come to MSG.

Also on the Islanders side, Simon Holmström is a beast. Took two tough shots that left him hurting and still barely missed any time.

TOI watch continues. Hendrix Lapierre was barely out there for nine minutes, Leonard for ten, Beauvillier for eleven. Possible that line doesn't have Carbery's trust yet. They combined for six shots, and Leonard had his goal. Maybe they'll be putting in extra legwork tomorrow night?

I think the PP issues are stemming from:
Ovi+Strome having a hard time keeping the puck in front of the forwards
Carlson having a hard time with keep-ins
Ovi+Carlson being old
Maybe splitting up the three of them helps all those aspects? Could be worth a try, and I'm sure things will be tweaked.
glb.dogfishcr.us
No idea how to fix the penalty kill, or if it even needs fixing before the season really gets going. If I had anyone's ear, I'd suggest tweaking the PP units to something like:
Wilson-Strome-Protas-Ovechkin-Chychrun
Dubois-McMichael-Leonard-Carlson-Sandin

The special teams are still struggling. The first power play was nothing at all, the second one took a few seconds longer than allowed to get a goal. The PK got scored on twice out of the three times they got sent out. It's still very early, but things need to look better.

Alex Ovechkin got his first point of the year with an assist via rebound, but still seems frustrated with his own shot selection and positioning. We heard him mic'ed up and complaining last game, this game we saw him on the bench exclaiming "fuck me," and I don't think it was a request.
