For context (a thread!): I left media in 2022 after more than 18 years in freelance/staff newsroom roles, working primarily as a critic, feature writer, business analyst, editor, and reporter. Heaviest focus areas included games, consumer tech, film/TV, geek culture, and web culture.

This is still more @haynerland.com's lane than mine but I'm here for it

Good flag!! "Great in IMAX" is pretty much the only reason I want to go to a theater anymore unless there's a performative or themed component a la Alamo (I miss Rowdy Cats screenings)

Fun start, count me in. It definitely feels like a lineup of I Think You Should Leave sketches joined together by an appropriately bizarre plot. I don't mean that as a negative.

OH SHIT THE CHAIR COMPANY PREMIERED

The EA app doesn't even launch! Great stuff.

Campaign gets off to a strong start, I'm excited to see how it ramps up.

"Not taking 5+ minutes of fiddling with excess menus, load screens, and restarts just to start playing" seems to me like an extremely solid starting point for any game to build off of

In the Mouth of Madness slides in there nicely too, with 59% on RT and 7.1 on IMDb. I'd bet most of the non-Jurassic Sam Neill catalog hit the sweet spot

I think my favorite Battlefield 6 feature is it not having a pointless and will to live-killing frontend client that needs to update and restart anytime you give it a sidelong glance

One of the greatest Let's Plays of All Time is perfect for the Halloween season.

Pathologic, For Those Who Will Never Play It perfectly captures the theatrical qualities of the game by treating the game as a read-through with actors reading for all of the characters.

I can only think of one AAA shooter that has ever stepped to the lectern and made actual good use of that time.

Battlefield 6 campaign mission in Brooklyn hits different with the seemingly omnipresent threat of American military presence throughout actual American cities.

That's a good one to jump on. Heavy stuff, with some really gnarly episodes. But nuanced where it needs to be IMO

This was brought to you by an absolute CLASSIC, 12/30/97 on a NYC subway

I'm not unearthing any fresh truth here but there sure were some ripping Phish shows in 1997

Yup, totally. A hard stare is enough sometimes, the worst ones are usually the biggest fuckin cowards.

No dispute here. I think it's perfectly appropriate to shame and ostracize a member of a death cult who thinks it's a good idea to publicly show support for said death cult in 2025.

You ever watch Band of Brothers? There's a really good episode later in the series (it's called Why We Fight if memory serves) where the story lands in a rural village just outside of a concentration camp as it's being liberated. It does a very good job of grappling with exactly this.

I hate my mental map. It perpetuates the kind of bias that we would all do well to get past. I recognize the need for it and it's hard to separate my fiery emotional response to the past 10 years from that cold logic but... yeah. Like I said, depressing. Happy Sunday!
