I’ve got thoughts™️about the state of our learned societies today, but I’m mostly grateful for the people with whom I get to stir the pot, complain, celebrate, laugh, dine, scheme, think. A society thrives with members like us.

One of my grad students said knowledge production is like key lime pie but maybe it’s more like the Baja Blast pie.
A meme in the corporate world is that legal’s idea of a perfect company is one that produces nothing and has no customers. I think this meme is now pertaining to our academic societies, a society that produces no knowledge and has no members.

This pie isn’t for Gen Z it’s for the millennials who are obsessed with “what the kids are up to” and making reviews like “I tried the Baja Blast pie so you don’t have to!”
I went out and bought the new Taco Bell mountain dew Baja Blast pie because I love neon food (it was good!) and also I need to test out my Mr Beast thumbnail face www.businessinsider.com/taco-bell-mo...
Taco Bell's new Mountain Dew Baja Blast pie is part of a strategy to reach Gen Z. I tried it.
Taco Bell's bright green Mountain Dew Baja Blast pie looks disgusting. But it's part of a strategy to reach Gen Z. And it's surprisingly good.

This is horrible news. This program is a huge success, identifies brilliant scholars and gives them a transitional landing place that can help them land a tenure track job in the system. It’s a win for students, their programs, and all the schools in the system. Why end it?
A devastating set of decisions on the part of UC leadership to withdraw support from our nationally recognized postdoc program that prioritizes research excellence combined with addressing our university public service mission. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

Thrilled today to release our big report on tactical nukes.
In writing up all of the effects, it was striking just how unprepared we would be to handle any of these scenarios—and how much the mere presence of these weapons add vulnerability to any crisis.
Quick thread on why TNW are so risky:
