The build up to Sonic 3’s release in 1994 felt more muted than Sonic 2

We were definitely hyped, but SEGA had a lockdown on press coverage and it just wasn’t on the same level - stories told later suggest it’s cos the game was unfinished until literally days before!

We can’t have a #WhensDay after releasing a Sonic 2 vid and NOT talk about Sonic 2sDay!!

Who lived through it?!

Would love to hear your memories of it!!

Y’know, ironically the graphical trickery that was meant to make Vectorman stand out really put me off it

It just seemed like a gimmick and I actively avoided it for ages

It’s actually really good! 😂😂

(Art from @peachflavor3d on Twitter- thanks!!)

After Burner got ported to just about anything with an on-switch so it’s no surprise it pops up on Master System and Famicom!

The Tengen US NES release was unlicensed though right?!

Anyway, it’s a spanking win for SMS - even if the PAL cover makes me want to cry

Now this is one I was NOT aware of back in the day

Altered Beast got a licensed release (by Asmik) on the Famicom?!?

It’s got a few positive changes tho really neither Famicom nor SMS really deliver imho!!

There are a lot of surprising battles between Master System and NES (or Famicom!)

Sometimes the same game and sometimes more a version per IP!

Star Wars was a big one - and a SEGA win! - but what other crackers were out there?!

Astal is gorgeous - but from a few goes I’ve not really clicked with it

Def one to come back to though as it does seem people that have played it more seem to love it! Any fans?!

Now You’re Really In Deep S#?T!

Galactic Attack / Layer Section is one of about a million Saturn games I keep meaning to play. So I’m making a list for the Fenrir!

Suggestions welcome!

Here's mine! What I've always liked about much of Atari's arcade roster is that they challenge the player to think and react rather than learn and memorise patterns. Which is something that was lost when operators/owners wanted games with limited levels and high difficulty to impose a set game time.

It’s the big one!!

What are your favourite SEGA arcades?!

This could obvs be a long list but here are four absolute beauties to get you thinking!!

I love Pac-Mania, even though I'm no good at it despite many years of attempts to improve. 😁

There's Mario Kart arcade series? This completely passed me by. Here's my nomination for a Namco arcade title from more recent years. 👇

Is it Ridge Racer you can't include or are you Tekken the piss?
Anyway I do quite like the old games, remember picking up the 50th anniversary collection on console some time ago. A lot of good stuff despite the obvious absence of anything released in the 3D era.

F-Zero AX! I know this is cheating a bit as it was a joint venture between Nintendo, SEGA, and Namco… but from what I understand, Namco played a significant role in the development of the Triforce hardware (despite it being based on the SEGA NAOMI board and the Nintendo Gamecube’s Gekko IBM PowerPC)

What are your favourite Atari arcade games?!

To be fair, most came into arcades too early for me and I know them from ports or playing much later - but they’re still important parts of my gaming history!

Star Wars and Paperboy especially!

What are the best Namco arcades?!

You’ll spot an obvs gap in mine as I can’t bring myself to include… while Pacmania gets it on a technicality that the ad is bloody awesome 😂

MK GP?! It’s not great but it IS the only proper arcade in my local bowling alley!!

Y’know, I’ve always kind of looked down on this Streets of Rage 3 cover

But actually it’s just Axel’s derpy face!! The rest is brilliant - and that back panel is usually covered with writing but it’s ace!!

The actual cover art for Contra Hard Corps is bloody amazing as well though!! (Genesis version surprisingly! This is a slightly different version…)

But again, not if you’re in Europe. FFS!!!

Just have a good look at this Contra Hard Corps art and then go have a look at Probotector

Why Konami, whyyyyyyy?!

I think this is from a soundtrack album not any of the game covers - anyone know?

It’s bloody cool either way!!

It’s #ThirstyThursday but who needs smut when you’ve got retro gaming artwork!!

First up: the ridiculously good JP cover for Double Dragon on the Game Boy which has no right to be this good!!
