Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

"Drawing Vegeta" has become muscle memory and drawing him poorly would actually be a little hard... until I decided to do it with my left hand. Right hand drawing for comparison lol.

Bin so gespannt, welche mir völlig unbekannte Person, von der/dem es auf Deutsch immerhin einen Beitrag in einem Lyrikband von 1997 gibt (den wir selbstverständlich nicht im Bestand haben), morgen den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhält.
