The Southern Canadian Prairies have the greatest potential for grid scale solar. Coupled with East West grid improvements they could supercharge Canada's clean electricity.

Yes! I used to bicycle commute in Coquitlam to PoCo, and did so every working day except for 1 week of snow in the winter.
The Lower Mainland and bicycles? Especially south of the Fraser as well as… everywhere.
Made for cycling.
Needed: a dramatic increase in bicycle infrastructure valley wide.

The carbon tax paid c.80% of citizens more than it cost us. Only the wealthiest polluters were out of pocket. Cancelling it expressly benefits the wealthy while impoverishing the rest of us.

Plus, we need more robust climate policy, not less of it.

Sad to see human suffering made worse by climate change.

A warmer atmosphere means more energetic storms.
Rising oceans mean higher chance of coastal flooding.
Climate change makes events like this more frequent and more damaging.

There is a human cost to not stopping climate change.

Photos coming out of Western AK are devastating.

Hardest hit are indigenous villages off road system, many miles by air from supplies. Most built on river deltas w/ no high ground to which to escape.

Cuts to NASA/NOAA mean worse weather data. Cuts to EPA mean no grants for erosion control. Etc.
newseye.bsky.social
These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

I have said this is true.
Someone actually did a survey to illustrate the shift to Bluesky from Twitter.

I wonder what BC Hydro's plans are for grid scale battery storage?

Anyone in British Columbia know?

Picture perfect California weekend

195th & 196th days in 2025 with >100% WindWaterSolar for part of day

WWS peaked at 135% of demand both days

Gas down 19% v '24 & 37% v '23
Batteries up 57% v '24 & 205% v '23
Solar up 15% v '24 & 44% v '23

WWS 54.6% of demand v 46.7% in '23

Interesting.

This would connect "wear and tear" on the roads and the cost of maintenance with the weight of the vehicles.
It might encourage smaller vehicles to lower taxes.

In BC we suffer from "pavement princesses" (giant single occupancy vehicles)

@davidebybc.bsky.social What do you think?

For clean energy. This is a great time to be alive!

You can help by replacing your home's gas appliances with electric appliances.

We're too busy building high cost and polluting nuclear and gas plants in Canada to build out low cost, renewable wind and solar power, like the rest of the world is doing.

Solar laggard Canada 🇨🇦

Despite excellent solar radiation in many locations, Canada remains well behind other economies at similar latitudes.

Solar electricity generation per capita in 2024 (kWh):
🇳🇱 1,235
🇩🇪 877
🇯🇵 781
🇩🇰 668
🇫🇷 354
🇨🇦 237

Truth really matters in the fight against climate change.

not "both sidesism"
not "lets have a debate"
not "paid lobbyists for moneyed interests"
Journalistic integrity that speaks truth to power really matters.

thank you for standing up for Truth.

So encouraging to see the economics of solar making this shift from polluting power to cleaner power.

(despite all the noise from that man in the white house on the corner down the street)

Reliable affordable non-polluting energy is a benefit to all.

Hey Canadians. Got a minute?
The polluting interests are at it again.
lobbying politicians for things normal citizens don't want or need. Things that hurt our air, land, water, economy, health and our fight against climate change.

Spare a minute to help?

NEW | EU solar generation has already exceeded its 2024 total as of September ☀️🇪🇺

Solar is by far the fastest growing source of electricity in the EU, up 20% year-on-year.

Another new record for batteries in California 🔋⚡️

Batteries met a record high 37.2% of load at 6:25pm yesterday, Oct 12.

The share of load remained at >30% for two whole hours from 5:50 to 7:50 during peak demand and discharged late into the night, reducing gas and imports.

this is a nice rendering by @nickevershed.bsky.social but, er, it definitely shows coal power output remaining persistently high even as renewable energy grows, which feels like a problem

a hand-drawn chart showing renewable energy griwing but coal output remaining stagnat for the past three entire years because demand itself has been growing oddly fast

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

Interesting read.
My summary:
"Because this project will never discharge its full capacity, some of the cost to build is essentially wasted.
Since batteries discharge daily, they have a much higher utility which offsets their higher up-front costs making them lower cost in the long run."
