“The net zero transition can create more energy jobs than will be lost. But to make that happen, we need far more pro-active policies.”

Our new report on transitioning fossil fuel workers on the front page of today’s @scotsman.com

We call on the Scottish Government to take action in four key areas:

🤝 Labour market planning and data
🏭 Green industrial strategy
👨‍🔧 Re-skilling and retraining
💷 Workers’ voice, pay + conditions
futureeconscot.bsky.social
The lesson is clear: the phase-out of oil and gas cannot be left to market forces.

Scotland needs proactive planning and investment to ensure no worker or region is left behind.
futureeconscot.bsky.social
While creating jobs is essential, by itself it’s not enough. There must also be clear pathways for oil and gas workers to transition into green jobs.

Our analysis finds gaps in skills, qualifications, and pay — which must be addressed to avoid disruption.
futureeconscot.bsky.social
This isn’t inevitable. With strong ambition and targeted policy, we find the net zero transition could create up to 40,000 more energy jobs than are lost by 2030.

But this requires far more proactive policy and planning.
futureeconscot.bsky.social
Scotland has some of Europe’s best renewable energy resources, but so far green job creation hasn’t kept pace.

For every one clean energy job created since 2014, three oil and gas jobs have been lost.

futureeconscot.bsky.social
Our new report finds that oil and gas employment in Scotland has fallen by a third since 2014 — around 34,000 job losses. This is despite new oil and gas licenses.

Forecasts predict a further 20-50% decline by 2030.

While some try to blame net zero targets, the real reasons are economic and geological.

The North Sea is a maturing basin, and reserves are running out. Like it or not, Scotland must now prepare for life beyond fossil fuels.

🚨 NEW REPORT 🚨

Since the 1960s, the fossil fuel industry has shaped Scotland’s economy and identity.

After decades powering growth and jobs, this era is drawing to a close 🧵 www.futureeconomy.scot/publications...

Last week, BrewDog sold its Kinrara estate to a natural capital investor

Some say the deal proves private investors can fund nature restoration. But in reality, it shows why private finance can’t fix the nature crisis

We were delighted to join today’s #TaxJusticeScotland conference

Tax reform is central to creating a fairer and greener Scotland. As the election approaches, it’s critical we don’t shy away from bold reforms

For a better ScotWind deal for workers, taxpayers and supply chains, we recommend:

📈 Scrap price ceilings to maximise revenue
✊Take public equity stakes to share profits
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Stronger incentives for Scottish supply chains
✅ Make Fair Work criteria mandatory
futureeconscot.bsky.social
In 2022, the ScotWind leasing round awarded rights for 20 new offshore wind projects.

Our analysis found 4 key flaws with the process:

❌ Constrained public revenue
❌ Weak incentives for Scottish supply chains
❌ No Fair Work requirements
❌ Weak fines for non-compliance

🚨 NEW REPORT: ‘Rethinking ScotWind’

Scotland has some of the world’s best offshore wind resources.

But who really stands to benefit from our offshore boom?

Our new report argues that we need a better deal for taxpayers, workers and supply chains.🧵
