It's the giving season, so I made a little guide on better ways to help homeless people than by donating to big companies. Please note, this guide is based on my own experiences + knowledge, and may not be accurate for all situations. I'll answer any questions I can.
It's the time of year when a lot of people want to feel good by donating to people who are less well off than they are, which is great! However, stuffing a couple of dollars in a bell ringer's bucket isn't very helpful. Here's some better ways to show kindness to people going through a hard time. Please note, this is based on my experiences while homeless, and certainly isn't accurate for every situation. The best and easiest way is to give cash directly to a homeless person. This way, they can choose what's most useful for them at that time. Of course, many people are judgemental about where they think the money will go, so the next best thing is gift cards. If you have the means and want to feel like a hero, go to your local homeless shelter and hand out a bunch of $20 gift cards*; they'll talk about your kindness for months. Of course, giving even a $5 gift card to a single person is still showing kindness, and directly helping someone in need. Another great way to help is donating season-appropriate clothing**. Hats and gloves are always donated in excess, but socks often aren't. Winter shoes and boots are almost always wanted, as they're often expensive and get worn out quickly. Coats are also helpful; even homeless people living in shelters often spend a significant amount of time outside. Belts aren't seasonal, but are always in demand, as are undergarments. The same goes for backpacks, as people both in and out of shelters usually have yo carry a lot of things with them. Another way to be generous is with care packages. For these, compact is better! Space is extremely limited for homeless people; if they're on the streets, then they have to carry everything they own with then, and if they're in a shelter, they likely have a small area to keep their belongings. Here's a suggestion of things to put in one: Trial size shampoo/conditioner/soap (nicely scented or higher quality ones are especially considerate) Disposable razors A small bottle of mild-to-moderately scented perfume or cologne (strong scents can be overpowering) Alcohol-free mouth wash (my local homeless shelter doesn't allow items that contain alcohol, and that's probably a common theme in shelters) Mini sewing kit A comb or hair brush A kind note Hair elastics/scrunchies/bobby pins Nail clippers A power bank Phone charging cable A small notebook Ibuprofen/tums/bandaids A small stuffed animal I'm certainly not saying you have to include all of these and/or nothing else; this is just a list of things that are useful but aren't already frequently donated. There are also ways to donate your time, instead of money or items. You can see if your local homeless shelter needs volunteers for anything. If you have a skill (I.e. hair cutting, playing an instrument, being good at paperwork, artistic skills), you can offer to perform it or teach it. If you personally know a homeless person, you can offer to bring them to an appointment if you have a car, or offer them a place to keep a few of their belongings if you have extra space. Above all, just be kind. Don't assume how they got there, because you're probably wrong. Don't say or think things like "they wouldn't be in this situation if they tried harder", because you're *definitely* wrong. They're just people, most of whom hit a patch of bad luck. Unless you've got enough money in your bank account to buy a second house in your area, then the same thing could happen to you. Even then it could, with a bad enough natural disaster. Notes: *For gift cards, consider the usefulness to the person. If it's to a restaurant, will the amount of the card cover an average meal? Is the person likely to be harassed for "appearing homeless"? Not-so-fun fact: McDonald's treats homeless-appearing people horribly. They call the cops so frequently that I've witnessed the police showing up *without being called* to make sure there weren't any homeless people there. It doesn't matter if they've bought something and are being quiet and polite; they made a thirty minute time limit that they'll use as an excuse to get rid of anyone they deem undesirable. Also to think of: Is it a place they can easily get to? Is it a place that's only open at specific times, which may prevent access? If it's to somewhere to buy physical objects, are they going to be able to keep said objects with them? For example, the homeless shelter I know doesn't allow outside food or drink to be brought in, so a gift card to a grocery store would have extremely limited usefulness for anyone staying there. However, it could be quite useful for someone living outside, who likely has to buy their food as they need it. **Things to consider when donating clothing. Donating used clothing is fine, but make sure it's still in good condition. Homeless people are still people, and they deserve dignity and respect just as much as anyone else. Don't donate things that are stained or full of holes, or smell really weird. Do donate things that are nice but don't fit you, or are a style you're no longer interested in. If you're buying things to donate, consider donating a variety of sizes. People who are plus sized or petite are often left out, which can make winter harder for them, especially given that their clothes often cost more or are harder to find. If you're donating multiple things, perhaps donate different styles of things, too, rather than several of the same style. No one wants to feel like they're wearing 'the homeless uniform'. Variety ensures that people can still feel like individuals while staying warm, and cuts down on the confusion of accidentally taking someone else's thing because they look the same.
