Great news for yeast tetrad dissectors: Singer has stepped up in the wake of the closure of Cora Styles Needles N Blocks to make dissection needles. My lab manager beta tested them & deemed them, and I quote, "flawless." So glad to have a new source! www.singerinstruments.com/product/sing...

🚨🧪New lab preprint: "We therefore propose a model for cytoskeletal evolution in which pools of microtubule network components constrain and guide the diversification of the entire network, so that the evolution of tubulin is inextricably linked to that of its binding partners." tinyurl.com/27ck46nb
Figure one in our new preprint showing the diversity of microtubule binding proteins in different eukaryotic lineages. There are a lot of these proteins all across the eukaryotic tree!

OTD in 1674, Antonie von Leeuwenhoek sent the first of many letters to Henry Oldenburg of the Royal Society of London describing the “animalcules” he had observed in rainwater using a microscope.

Just when I thought Canada couldn't get any more Canada: there's a hockey stick in this beaver dam.
Beaver dam between two ponds of water in the evening. A hockey stick with a broken paddle sits among the branches of the dam. A beaver swims through the still water next to the dam.

Early work found no REM in sleeping echidna, suggesting REM sleep arose in other mammals after diverging from monotremes. Later work discovered REM in the only other living monotreme genus. What do platypuses look like when dreaming, you ask?
