The US was never 'almost' on the Axis 'side', because WW2 was first and foremost a geopolitical contest for control of strategic resources rather than a moral conflict about fascism vs antifascism. The US was, and is, a nation built on genocide and imperialism. This can all be true.

I'd ally with virtually anyone against the actual Nazis, but remember US opposition to Nazism was driven by longterm geopol interests & anticipated clash of global hegemony rather than ideological antifascism. Nazism famously aped US eugenicism; w/o Pearl Harbour the US may have stayed out of war.
