Concerning the conditions of detention, Gheed Kassem says: “There is almost no food for him and the detainees, and the bathroom is only available for one hour a week and for one minute. There is only one towel for every five inmates”. She added that she had already visited 121 former Gazan detainees and explained: “All the Gazan detainees who have been released and all those I met said that the jailers had inserted a stick into their anus, and that they had been attacked by dogs who had bitten them on the body”. Regarding the Doctor Abu Safiya, his lawyer explains that " his legal status is 'unlawful combatant', this means he could spend years in prison without trial".

At the end of this conversation, Gheed Kassem calls for an escalation and intensification of the international campaign to release Abu Safiya and all detainees from Gaza.

Gheed Kassem told us: “Doctor Abu Safiya has been severely beaten 6 times by his jailers since our last visit 10 days ago. Four of his ribs have been broken and his eyes are clearly bruised from the beating.”

Gheed Kassem reports that despite what he is going through, "Doctor Abu Safiya is keeping his spirits high. He knows that there is a massive international campaign outside the country to free him". She explains: “He's worried about the resumption of the war. He asks a lot of questions about the hospital, about the hospital staff, about the hospital patients, about his son who was killed by the Israeli army and is buried in the hospital courtyard? He asks if the body was moved from outside the hospital, if it was moved from the grave to a cemetery in Gaza.”
