Flowers of California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). Two fused sepals form a hat-like structure that has already dehisced, while four free bright orange petals adorn the blossom. Inside the flower, though not visible from this perspective, are numerous stamens arranged in several whorls and a gynoecium composed of two carpels.
