Earlier this year, the FCC hosted a Club Lunch to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the war with a panel of correspondents & other notable FCC members who witnessed the conflict firsthand.

During the war, the FCC became a hotspot for journalists, as did Saigon, the former capital of South Vietnam where correspondents were free to live & work. Many of the war’s iconic photographs, including the last helicopter out of Saigon, were taken by FCC members.

The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, just over 50 years ago. Spanning nearly two decades & resulting in a loss of over a million lives, it was one of the longest & deadliest conflicts in history.

To discuss how Hong Kong can improve its literacy rates & foster a love for reading in both children & adults, the FCC held a #ClubLunch panel featuring representatives from three literacy-focused charities in Hong Kong.

Only 32% of #HK youth say they are confident with their #reading skills (still below the 43% international average) & just 14% of the city’s parents actually enjoy reading.

According to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study of 2021, only 16% of parents in #HongKong read with their children — far below the international average of 42%.

After the minute of silence, Davis and members of the Press Freedom Committee read all the names aloud, commemorating the victims in what has become the deadliest conflict for the media ever documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The FCC’s Press Freedom Committee held a commemorative name-reading event on Monday to honour all the journalists and media workers who have been killed in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
