Whenever you read anything about workplace culture- like kindness, compassion, relationships, listening, inclusion... is there ever anything new?

We KNOW about all these things.

We don't need more & more information- what we need are conditions which support the ongoing PRACTICE of these things.

I don't think this concept is understood - or talked about - nearly enough. Many disabled people spend very little time in our comfort zone, where things are easy. There are so many extra challenges to doing things, interacting, etc that if we are up and about, we are probably pushing ourselves. 1/3

Spent some time this afternoon finishing a poem that has been rattling around in my head for a long time.
Experimenting with turning it into an audio/video to practice allowing those parts of me that have been silenced for so long, to be heard. Even if no one else ever hears them…

I can now see why I always took things "personally.” Whenever I felt a hint of embarrassment or twinge of guilt, I was flooded with shame.

Shame nosed its way into every mistake; I thought taking responsibility also meant acknowledging worthlessness. We are worthy of our own forgiveness.

Courage BY Anne Sexton.

It is in the small things we see it.
The child's first step,
as awesome as an earthquake.
The first time you rode a bike,
wallowing up the sidewalk.

When I began to explore the missing 7.5 yrs of my life while writing my #memoir #LandBeneaththeWaves, I couldn't believe how quickly I unravelled. My journal read: Can open. Worms everywhere.

I've written in Therapy Today about how counselling helped me work thro childhood trauma & finish my book.
It changed my life

On training today, I asked how we might approach this if the persons response is “I wouldn’t have woken up.”?
Diverting to risk assessment, as expected
I hope one day I can help the local system see that there is another way to have conversations about suicide that might actually be more helpful?

I am really fighting the wanting to “life tidy” and get rid of everything but I know that would be a major warning sign… I’m so tired of being my own crisis team risk assessment 🤦🏻‍♀️

Asking questions like ‘Are you feeling suicidal?’ are the start of a conversation that can save a life.

People don’t take their own lives because they’ve been asked these questions– they take them because no-one asked, and had the chance to hear the pain in their response 💔

Thanks for sharing this - a couple of things…I’m none the wiser regarding what ‘grit’ is, and, aren’t ‘complex’ emotional reactions a reasonable response to the shitshow we find ourselves in that shouldn’t be located in individuals as ‘poor mental health’?

If we wanted to shift towards a more psychologically-informed healthcare system, at its heart would be access to regular reflective practice for everyone.

Over time, this would be the catalyst to more thoughtfulness, & more embracing of the feelings & vulnerabilities that are intrinsic to our work.
