In honour of #Womenhistorymonth meet the Flying Seven, pictured in #Vancouver in 1936. They tried to enlist in the Canadian Air Force, but they weren’t allowed because they were girls. Instead they raised money for the war effort by performing stunts in the air evelazarus.com/tosca-trasol...
Between 1869 & 1948, Britain shipped over 100,000 mostly orphaned boys and girls (some as young as 4) to work on Canadian farms and as household servants. It’s estimated that more than 10% of our population is made up of their descendants. Are you one of them? Story:

Tuesday Book Review: Beneath Dark Waters by Eve Lazarus
This wonderful book tells the story of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. Known as Canada's Titanic, it was one of our worst tragedies.
Where most of see a jumbled store window, Bruce Stewart sees “unconscious art.” “This is central to my collection of window displays as it showcases the abjectly surreal nature of arrangements," he says. Photos from the '70s: evelazarus.com/vancouvers-s...
Vancouver’s Store Windows – an Essay in Photos | Eve Lazarus
In the 1970s, Bruce Stewart documented a series of crazy store front windows around Vancouver and in Nanaimo

You have seen some of Angus McIntyre's beautiful photos on this page, on my blog and in my book Vancouver Exposed: Searching for the City's Hidden History.
Now you can meet Angus next Saturday and hear about his 40-year career as a Vancouver bus driver @spacecentreyvr.bsky.social - bit.ly/4nCBHXD
Grace Hospital opened on October 2, 1927 at Heather and 26th Avenue in Vancouver. It had 50-beds and bassinets. The new Grace Hospital opened in April 1982, and four years later, the old hospital had morphed into "Grace Estate" a two-level, 40-suite condo building

Are in planning to be in North Vancouver tomorrow night? So am I! I'll be giving a talk and showing off some photos from my new book Beneath Dark Waters: The Legacy of the Empress of Ireland Shipwreck. It's at Lynn Valley Library on Lynn Valley Road at 6:30 pm evelazarus.com/book/beneath...
Today is #WorldMaritimeDay and a great excuse to remember the #EmpressofIreland, the CPR liner that sank in 1914 and claimed four more passenger lives than the Titanic. There were 75 passengers onboard from BC - only 10 returned #shipwreck #beneathdarkwaters

Lord Byng Secondary turned 100 this year, which is quite a feat considering most Vancouver buildings are lucky to make it to their 25th. The school is on W16th in Point Grey, and the photo was likely taken in 1925

It would be interesting to see the changes nearly 15 years on!
Angus McIntyre took the first photo from Choklit Park at W 7th and Spruce St in 1974. He took the second photo at the same spot in 2011. The CPR yards are visible and the foreground is clearly ready for development.

Taking the bus to the PNE this weekend? Angus McIntyre is on the back of a Brill trolley maneuvering around a detour to the PNE in 1974. He tells me they'd do this while travelling at speeds of up to 30 km/hr.

In 1957 the PNE prize home (which is still in Burnaby) at 1,444 sq ft, was 1.5 times the size of a normal house. It was a single-storey early Rancher and it was less than half the size of this year's prize home which comes with a library and a whiskey tasting room evelazarus.com/the-pne-priz...
In 2020 Sébastien Hudon bought a film at an online auction in England sight unseen. It turned out to be a newsreel missing since 1914. It had images of two Empress of Ireland survivors from Silverton, BC and it led Seb on a quest to find the story behind a broken ring evelazarus.com/the-story-of...
