“Ale" works in the carrot harvest in CA. She earns $3.05 for every box of carrots she packs. One box has 24 bunches of 7 carrots each. To earn $100 she has to pack 34 boxes or 816 bunches which represents over 5000 carrots picked in a day. #WeFeedYou

Your Thanksgiving gravy tastes better when you use union mushrooms. Let's give a huge thanks to workers like "Adan" who harvest mushrooms for Monterey Mushrooms under a UFW contract. On an average day, he picks 240-280 of the blue baskets you see in this vid. #WeFeedYou

An extraordinarily practical way to help people lower their energy bills. With all of the big talk about addressing affordability and rising energy bills, this would be a great solution to include as a rate payer relief solution in next years wave of data center and energy bills.
Today on Volts: I've had more requests to cover this than almost any other topic in the pod's history, so now, at long last, balcony solar! We dig into how "plug-in solar" took off in Europe & how it's making its way to the US, starting in Utah. Backyard DIY types rejoice!
What's the deal with balcony solar?
Cora Stryker joins me to explain how "plug-in" solar took Europe by storm and is finally, via Utah (?), making its way to America.

This year's tariff madness has an interesting structural feature. What @jonasnahm.com is calling an "inversion" is that Trump has higher tariff rates on intermediate goods and basic materials (esp. steel and aluminum) than finished goods. He points out one consequence. There are others.

A short🧵.
10/15 This tariff inversion means Toyota pays less to ship a completed Prius from Japan than Ford pays for the inputs to build an F-150 in Michigan.

“This is where America’s next century of steel is being forged.”

This is the CEO of US Steel saying it will run its coal-based facilities into the ground and leave for non-union states, rather than reinvest in cleaner technologies in the towns that birthed the steel industry. Shameful legacy.

The data center explosion has given the environmental movement a critical opportunity to remobilize folks - esp. rural constituencies not known to be our usual base - on core issues of clean air, clean water, and affordable clean energy.

but it will take organizers, not just comms.
