Over the last few weeks I've struggled with my writing. Characters, settings, and even action has felt flat.
I've spent a bunch of time doing research I should have done earlier, and now I feel ready to write again.

So now's obviously the perfect time for my carpal tunnel to act up 🙄

Time for a stereotypical vague writing post!

I have huge news I've been sitting on for months that I will be able to share soon! Keeping the secret is killing me!

It's a writing day for me, but the next few scenes will bring me right into a World War I battle (with invaders from outer space and five-legged walking tanks). And while I've done my documentary research to get the facts right, I think I need some emotional research as well.
Time for a movie day!

I am proud to share that my short horror story "Mortem Moratus" has been published in the December issue of Exquisite Death--a fitting e-zine for this story's dark and unsettling elements (and sense of humor)!

Read it (for free) now!

Deep in the woods on a logging crew, Claude is hiding something.
Any who discover his secret disappear.
He claims he was chosen.
But chosen by who, or what?
And what if someone else is a better choice?

Read "Once, on the Northern Woods" by M.C. Schmidt for free in Issue 7 of Perseid Prophecies!

Foregoing the writing of actual words today to dive into some military history & structure research I should have done months ago.
And while it was a mistake to gloss over this before I began, and will now mean heavy rewrites of earlier scenes, I think I've found some key missing pieces.

Last night, Jessie and I were discussing the pronunciation of "Laval." When I pointed out I went to hockey camp in Laval, Quebec when I was a teenager, she asked how they pronounced it. I said I didn't remember for sure because that was "15 years ago."

I've lived in Canada for 20 years now, and over that time I have slowly but surely accepted that Thanksgiving comes in October for me now.
But I still can't bring myself to put up Christmas decorations until the last weekend of November.

I'm still excited about this, so...

RARE (featuring my scifi/noir "The Stuff Legends are Made Of") won the American Writing Awards Best Anthology, and Gas Giant Gambit was a finalist for AWA Fiction - Sci-Fi!

Big thanks to Alex Parker Publishing, and congrats to my fellow contributors to RARE!

As a student of psychology, the Freudian trio has always been my favorite advice for writing characters who sound distinct from one another.

(Also, a small bit of award news for both RARE and Gas Giant Gambit!)

I was just *this* close to being scammed. A few yellow flags set off my spidey-sense, and a little further digging (and messaging someone with the same name and title) yielded the truth in the nick of time.
Be careful out there fellow authors, and be skeptical of anyone that asks you for money.

I know we prefer word counts 'round these parts (52,880 so far), but I also just crossed 200 pages in this fist draft manuscript, and I think that's pretty neat too.
