Ever read a book that revolutionized your brain chemistry?

A review for the book Nefando by Mónica Ojeda: The fallibility of the spoken word; the desire to give form to a formless concept; language as an imperfect tool; how does one express our infinitely faceted inner feelings and pain within the confines and limitations of speech? The human experience is boundless and complex, we can approximate conveyance through the restricted lens of verbal or written communication, but we could never feasibly channel these emotions with the mere use of characters arranged in a specific order, or the vibrations of our vocal chords at precise frequencies and lengths alone. Our sensibilities are incorporeal, ethereal, enigmatic, and inscrutable. Objectivity has no place in a world comprised of individual subjectivity; a moral compass does not have a magnetic north to point towards.

This books dances on the razor's edge of acceptability. It's borderline reprehensible, deeply discomforting and disturbing, and it's one of the best, most thought provoking books I'll ever read. The structure at play is incredibly layered and experimental in presentation, the story switches between transcriptions of spoken interviews, excerpts of a fictional book-within-a-book, second person inner monologue, forum posts, and journal entries. Every character here is unified through their knowledge of the Spanish language, but 2 characters are Mexican, 3 are Ecuadorian, and 1 is Spanish. Even the language they have in common is still subject to their own idiosyncrasy, and perfect communication is an impossibility. It all really helps highlight just how vastly different we all are fundamentally, and how difficult human connection can be with our limited toolset. Everyone is defined by the desire for personal expression, to be understood on a deeper, innate level; to transcend their pain and take control over their personhood. If that's not a good definition of the lived experience, I don't know what else is. Words fail me.

you ever think about that guy in hunter x hunter who used nen for making websites. cuz i do. i imagine the kind of hassle it must be to try to reconfigure your nen because flash got deprecated and HTML standards changed again. fucking around with nen infused javascript and getting mad at themselves

Red Rooms is a tense, evocative, subtle, and complex film that pairs well w movies like Anatomy of a Fall. Billed as horror due to events that happen offscreen, but more of a hybrid. Disturbing, dislocating, with stunning choreography and acting. (Def understand aversion to watching it, tjo.)
