This is devastating to research and innovation across disciplines.
Nature reports that the National Science Foundation has stopped awarding new grants and allotting funds to existing ones. All of them. @colincarlson.bsky.social says that unless the freeze is lifted, it “is going to destroy people's labs.” 2/10

Exclusive: NSF stops awarding new grants and funding existing ones
US science funder also plans to screen grant applications for compliance with ‘agency priorities’.

40% of NSF terminations have been STEM education (including 1 of my projects). Consider the implications of defunding research on “how to improve the teaching of math and science, with the goal of expanding the number of future scientists who will fuel the U.S. economy.” @jillbarshay.bsky.social

Taking a break from general doom to celebrate a milestone birthday with those I love. Made even sweeter by an epic cameo message from @katetscott.bsky.social with a good reminder to persist in spaces not meant for us. ❤️

Very helpful info for those with NSF funding!
NSF grantees and awardees can learn from a *new report* how they might respond to grant changes like termination! 🔬 Like @davidimiller.bsky.social says, prepare now.

I helped edit this with the amazing @isaackamola.bsky.social at AAUP and other great colleagues. Posted w/ other CDAF resources here:

Welp, my work was among those stolen for this.
NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:

Oh good, it’s “an “idea lab” that will contribute to developing the capabilities and characteristics of effective leadership, while further studying the critical role basic principles of limited government, rule of law, and free enterprise play in supporting individual freedom and leadership.” 🎻🔥
We're in a 🎵 constitutional crisis 🎵 but at least we will have a new institute for leadership and free enterprise at the 🎵 business school 🎵

If you work in higher education in the US, now is the time to join the AAUP. Your campus doesn’t even need to have a chapter, you can join the National org. @aaup.bsky.social

This thread nails it.
The goal here isn't to make public schools more conservative-friendly. The goal is to dismantle public schooling by driving families and teachers away.

This is an incredible way to end a semester. ❤️
Grades are finalized. I asked students to write about what they think they were supposed to learn this semester. Then we did an email to home adults.

In every class, I wrote to my own home adults and cc’d my students. I’ve written every assignment with them; I wasn’t going to stop today. #EduSky

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

Here's mine:
1) supporting tchrs to enact more equitable math teaching
2) teachers’ principled resistance to curric change

2) the heretical corruption of scripture. (you can see it, right?)
