Still puzzling why one of these ended up in the Corbridge Hoard. Memento of a night out on the town with the lads from the fabrica?
As with the equestrian statue of Marcus in Rome, the locating slots for phalerae are visible on the bridle. The poll knot is partially preserved too.
This marvellous life-sized #horse head made of gilded bronze belonged to a figural group of a #Roman emperor in a quadriga or a biga (a chariot drawn by four or two horses). Found in Augsburg, dating 1st/2nd century AD. 🧵 1/2

As somebody who used to run inter-library loans for a small academic library, this is extremely concerning. As somebody who now edits and sells an academic journal (& used to joke that it was easier to sell books to the US than EU) it is perplexing. Let's hope the UK doesn't follow suit. #deminimis
Trump’s tariffs and removal of $800 de minimis exemption have crippled global library exchanges, stranding thousands of loaned books and research materials overseas. Carriers are refusing shipments, customs warehouses are overflowing, and international interlibrary loan networks are breaking down
The new Harzhorn report looks juicy (publications.dainst.org/books/dai/ca...) but at £242 in the UK something to check out in the library before B&C3 is finalised. Good to note that the PDFs will appear in October 2027 (patience, as we all know, is a virtue).

Unbidden, a sudden image of 10 blokes in a deceres 'catching a crab' ...
And, in case anybody's interested, the demo seems to work fine in linux (despite being marked as Windoze only on Steam). Can't help feeling JCNC would have enjoyed this ...
Strategos permet de recréer des batailles historiques entre plusieurs factions et un fonctionnement, sur le papier, très proche des phases de batailles de Total War.

#TrimontiumTuesday Brass saddle plates, with bosses, & incised decoration found at #Trimontium. AD80-100. As a #Roman cavalry fort, numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as harness & saddle fittings, were found; some of them show silver-plating & copper used to heighten the decorative effect.

Deliberate concealment? Or deliberate concealment and then ... where did I hide it?!
Nelson was, of course, JCNC's direct ancestor (that's what the N stands for). #AubreyMayITroubleYouForTheSalt
'A pint of your finest Imperial-Gallic, landlord! And have one for yourself!!'
'If it's all the same to you, sir, I prefer another glass of nice crisp Montefortino.'
'Does that make you a re-publican?'
I thank you ...

Hmm. Not sure about that 'military helmet stud'. Seems an overly optimistic ID.
Check out these ancient finds 👀

Pictured here are a Roman ring key, military helmet stud and incense bowl shard. They're just some of the artefacts unearthed on excavation and metal detecting surveys at Attingham Park in Shropshire.

At almost 2,000 years old, this child’s wooden toy sword is a remarkable survival from Roman times!

Found in the living quarters of the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda fort in 2017. Dated c.120 AD. Chesterholm Museum 📷 by me

A metal face mask from a #Roman cavalry helmet; the blank expression is quite off-putting even now, & must have been pretty intimidating in antiquity (whether or not they were ever worn in battle) 🏺 #AncientBlueSky
Incidentally, the Roman soldiers (in their weird scaly pantaloons) were modelled on C. Valerius Crispus from Wiesbaden (as was Forestier's reconstruction).
