After three months of consultations, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee tasked with developing a legally binding instrument on #plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, elected Julio Cordano 🇨🇱 to serve as its new Chair

After a second round of voting, the #PlasticsTreaty INC has selected Julio Cordano (Chile) as the next Chair of the INC process. #INC5.3

Following the first round of voting by secret ballot, no candidate received a majority of votes to be the next Chair of the Plastic Pollution INC. Unless the two candidates with the most votes can reach agreement for one to step aside, the INC will proceed with a second round of voting. #plastics

At #IPBES12, @ipbes.net Chair David Obura called for a “fast-track” approach to considering the remainder of the Background Messages of the Platform’s first fast-track Assessment, which focused on businesses' impacts and dependencies on #biodiversity

The intergovernmental negotiating committee tasked with developing a global agreement on plastic pollution is convening in Geneva today to elect officers, including a new Chair. While many delegates are hoping to elect a Chair by acclamation, lack of agreement may lead to a vote this afternoon.

At #IPBES12, agreement was reached on several agenda items, including on indicators and an intersessional process for a proposal on the Platform’s future work

The #ISPCWP1 adjourned without agreeing to any decisions.

The meeting will resume some time in the future to try again to operationalize the newest science-policy panel focused on #chemicals, #waste, and #pollution.

With no outcomes agreed, the #ISPCWP1 was adjourned.

The @unep.org science-policy panel for chemicals, waste & pollution will try again another time to adopt its rules of procedure.

Chair Álvarez Pérez adjourned the meeting at 8:44 pm.

This morning, delegates at #IPBES12 heard about progress across negotiation groups

The @ipbes.net Plenary is wrapping up on Sunday and delegates need to finalize their consideration of the #BizBiodiversity Assessment and other outstanding matters before then

#IPBES12 just suspended its Working Group 2 to provide Members time to consult on the intersessional process for developing a proposal regarding potential new reports and institutional arrangements for task forces and technical support units

Consultations on the Business Assessment are ongoing
Delegates at #IPBES12 not only agreed on workplan indicators for the period leading up to IPBES 13, they also agreed to mandate the development of a holistic indicator framework which will serve to assess @ipbes.net’s impact

Still working through the rules of procedure. Two rules agreed in the past two hours.

Other delegates are trying to find a way forward to quicken the pace on this last day of negotiations. There's hope to set up the @unep.org science-policy panel for chemicals, waste & pollution. #ISPCWP1

Delegates at @ipbes.net just elected a new Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, with a three-year term

Several of the outgoing Members will continue contributing to IPBES in other capacities, including as authors of ongoing assessments #IPBES12

At #IPBES12 there is a lot of interest in working on pollution, but delegates agreed not to add it to the workload just yet

On the Business and Biodiversity Assessment delegates made progress, reaching the end of the Summary for Policymakers key messages
