if we're going to keep calling it "continental philosophy" then we should rebrand analytic philosophy as "island philosophy"

Reading this attempted take-down of continental philosophy is just making me more sympathetic to continental philosophy, which really just cementing my identity as a contrarian (i.e., analytic philosopher)

"Spider-man, spider-man, does whatever a spider can"🎵
"Is he strong?"🎵
"Listen bud, he's got radioactive blood"🎵
"So... he's strong?"
"He's dying"

Something I have realized from playing some really difficult games recently and managing to get zen about losing over and over is that difficulty doesn't automatically become fun if you overcome the frustration part--something can be very difficult and also very boring

I want to include a high-level summary of integrated information theory in my consciousness class but I'm struggling to find an explanation that is both illuminating and non-technical (most definitions of II I've found are either short and opaque or super technical). Anyone have ideas?

If surrealist painting did not exist I do not know what I would put on my philosophy of mind slides, probably just blank space or stock photos of people in meetings I guess

Say what you will about gen AI but you must admit it solves what we all previously agreed was a huge problem: troublingly low levels of content

If I leave up a post that has 0 likes you can tell I’m really proud of it (delusional)
Gonna stop deleting my posts that don't get any uptake. Don't want to contribute to unrealistic liking and reposting standards in our culture. Striving to embody this guy in all that I do. Save the bad posts for propserity too

The way people talk about wokeness reminds me of the way people talk about unions where annoyance at minor perceived excesses gets exploited to support the perverse interests of reactionaries who could otherwise never win people to their cause
wokeness was our social immune system. maybe you got hay fever now and then but better than dying of 9000 opportunistic infections
I'm not right wing but some of this "woke" stuff is a little over the top [6 months later] Slavery was fine. Your city is under martial law

August is the Sunday of summer, which means that it doesn't count, it's ruined by the knowledge that summer is almost over. I believe we are owed another summer month to make up for this situation

I have an idea for a business: a monthly service that sounds good but is less good than it sounds and the price is just low enough that you will forget to cancel it

Hume was right we need to go back to calling all non-philosophers “the vulgar”

“You know, Socrates criticized the invention of writing for allowing our memories to degrade…” yeah idk maybe he was right?? I don’t know any ancient Greeks, maybe they had no trouble remembering where they knew that actor from and things like that

I think philosophy courses should be easy enough that students leave with positive feelings towards philosophy but not so easy that they decide to go to grad school

Philosophers of mind should start writing anecdotes about Fodor's 'Granny' character in their papers so historians of philosophy in the future can argue that she must have been a real person like Socrates

Something I have learned from watching Couples Therapy is that at some level every relationship problem is basically the same but when you zoom in every relationship is a very specific kind of mess that only these two (or more) people could have possibly created. It's very moving in a weird way

Mumford and Sons being British is one of those things that I know is true but cannot be integrated with my world model so it always hits like a brand new piece of information
Obama needs to stand trial for the existence of Mumford and Sons
