Study after study shows that it's remarkably cheap and easy to solve the problems of homelessness and poverty with low-barrier supportive housing and universal basic income, but our own fear that someone, somewhere will get something they didn't "earn" keeps us looking for other (punitive) options.

People can't hoard insulin due to it having a shelf life. They also would never take more than what they should due to the risk to their life. If I take so much as a couple units more than what I need, I risk passing out, seizures and giving myself a stroke. Again, it's a moot thought.

No, it's per pen, $55 for a pack of 5 (which is how they come). There is nothing said about vials. I pay $25 per vial for my 90 supply which is $150 for 6 at Kaiser for my Humalog. My Humulin N is $35 ea, but I is way less of that.

The $11/pen is based on the lowest income qualification, btw.

The pharmaceutical companies tweak the manufacturing process just enough every 10 years to make it ineligible for generic. We have limited access to the generic level of insulin, which is cheaper, here. It also tends to be less effective, unfortunately.

They sold the patent for $1 intending it to be kept that way after the first 10 years was up. Pharmaceutical companies learned that all they had to do was tweak 1 part of the manufacturing process to get a new patent, therefor keeping it from being a generic drug. That's what they do to this day.
