I work as a Lead Game Designer in Malta, and keep a myriad of unfinished somehow-still-alive side projects. Right now I'm focused on Stellar Settlers, a dice rolling strategy and luck board game. www.enriquehervas.com www.strawberrytreegames.com

🙌 I'm Enrique, Spanish living in Malta.

I've been a videogame designer for 1.5 decades.

I battle Unreal Engine during the day, and at night I try to finish my first boardgame project with my wife: Stellar Settlers.

It's a sci-fi themed dice rolling game of strategy and luck.

Nice to meet you!
So I used some packaging peanuts I got around to create giant plant-like shapes for a planter kind of thing. But the acrylic paint corroded them or something and they reduced in size considerably. Now they are tiny bushes... I wasn't expecting that!

After spraying the board is looking almost good enough that it doesn't need anything else, and I'm actually scared to spoil it if I try to do some wash or dry brush over it... I'll probably leave them as is 😅

More #WIP scatter terrain made of trash. I turned two blueberry boxes 🫐 into sci-fi planters, by adding some polystyrene bits on top, and cargo platforms with some cardboard crates and bits from a cheap toy. I think they'll look good after painting!

So I have enough Space Marines for a #killteam game, and I'm creating a board and some scenery. But I don't have an antagonist!

Does the #warhammercommunity have any suggestions on what models to get for joint ops?

Preferably not Chaos (not more Marines) or Orks (I like them too much).

A while ago I saw these 30x40cm canvases in a shop nearby and I thought they'd be perfect for a small modular skirmish game board so I got 4.

I put some white glue and sprinkled them with baking soda to add texture. Let's see how they come after painting.

How effective are #SteamNextFest events at boosting wishlist numbers for small #indiegames?

I’ve participated in several, so here’s a thread sharing real, humble data so you can see the impact👇 (thread)

literally if ai worked at all companies would keep it secret and use it to make a lot of money like they wouldnt advertise to you
I could improve a lot of things, but I think they are coming up as acceptable pieces of scenery, considering the very low budget... It's mainly made of trash, glue, toilet paper and painted with cheap acrylic paints.

"Large language models have, as Charlie Warzel puts it, "devoured the total creative output of humankind". This represents a massive enclosure of the digital commons. Writers, artists, and creators find their work incorporated into systems that have given them zero compensation"
More #WIP ominous statue. Did a spray base colour. I'm going to try to paint it in verdigris kind of old bronze for the soldier, and limestone for the base and ruins. Of course inspired by Maltese architecture that I have around.

I think I was right, this is looking promising as a scenery piece. Ominous soldier statue.

I've cut down a ring from a nappies bin bag refill thingy and I'm trying to cobble up a destroyed fountain kind of structure with the statue in the center.

Playtested #StellarSettlers Discovery with some friends. I think it was all very positive with a couple minor balancing adjustments needed. Everyone had fun, the winner wasn't decided until the last turn, and we got lots of laughs.

I think I can move on to polish.

I got all this crap for 1€ thinking I could turn it into some #Warhammer40k scenery...

The truck is slightly off scale, but it's weird in terms of proportions so maybe it does the trick with the appropriate destruction treatment. The soldier is giving me some big awesome statue vibes too!

After two years of publishers telling us “visual novels don't sell” and “AI could make a thousand like that” we’re finally announcing ❤️‍🔥 Mythic Love: Iberian Legends, a human-made monster romance VN (no, there's never enough of these) inspired by Spanish myths and legends! +info⬇️
And here she is along other completed Star Rise Defenders models. This is starting to look like an army of sorts!
The custom transfers for the shoulder pad symbols, as usual are very painful to do. The amount of swearing involved!

But I think I'm getting close to be a bit more consistent. I left the small symbol in the front shield for the end and was done 1st try without issues.
Meet Mara Lasaris: Star Rise Defenders 3rd Company Lieutenant, first of Auran's Children.

I'm quite proud of this one. More pics and details in the thread.

The Tetris Effect shows how repetition shapes thoughts, dreams, and mental imagery. Brain scans link it to visual processing and memory. Even people with amnesia dreamed of falling blocks after playing, despite not recalling the game. Fit the pieces together ➡️ w.wiki/PEv
That's a large amount of people that want their piece of the games pie, but aren't actually productive, so here we are.
My take is that equity firms owning multinational conglomerates that own the videogame development companies - that also have their expensive management structures - leaves practically no room for paying the people that actually make the games.

AI can't solve this by the way, nor should it.

As promised, here's my look at the history of console and arcade racing games from The Greatest Games You (Probably) Never Played!

We'll be talking about a few of these in the next few weeks!
The Classic Arcade and Console Era (1972-1989) - Driving Games
Driving games are one of the oldest and most evergreen categories in all of gaming. Here's an overview of how the genre evolved!

Of course some times I've gotten carried away and ended up with very complex systems that simulate full plays of with different player skills, with charts and all - which can be an overkill.

Knowing when to stop is hard when you are having fun!

And that's the lesson for today.
