For #AdaLovelaceDay your correspondent can personally recommend Sydney Padua's steampunk graphic novel of The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage.

Makes a great gift for a friend, too.

Lovelace can be seen studying the machine intently. She explodes, "Astounding!! In enabling mechanism to combine together general symbols in successions of unlimited variety and extent, a uniting link is established between the operations of matter--". Babbage looks surprised. Eh? Ada continues, "and the abstract mental processes of the most abstract branch of mathematical science!!!!". Babbage exclaims in delight, Yes, yes exactly. Ada, still excited says, A new, vast, and powerful language is developed for the future use of analysis so it may become of more speedy and accurate practical application for the purposes of mankind than the means hitherto in our possession have rendered possible!". A couple of party goers in the background mutter to each other "Hey look... we're present for the invention of the geek!". Lovelace looks at her fan saying This must be twittered! She looks confused, wait, this is a fan. Then sad. Suddenly there is a gaping hole in my life of which i was hitherto unaware.

We can remember Goodall’s accomplishments and legacy while recognizing that National Geographic created a narrative that erased the local people who contributed to her research. Her African colleagues deserve to be credited, not erased (10/10).

I had a mid-career fellowship and it was exactly what I needed to finish my book. The BA application forms are far simpler than you might expect if you’ve only ever seen forms for other funders. So, if you’re eligible, do explore further. Best of luck if you apply.

Wester Hailes is 2 miles from Heriot-Watt Campus; an unusually diverse part of Scotland, with some challenges but a lot of community spirit.
EDICa researchers will be sharing experiences they've gathered over the last 2 years, and listening to experiences shared in the workshop.

Dr Buck has done research for/on the U of Edinburgh and its links, the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and, as you can see in the next post, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, where Buck was awarded the final fellowship funded by the 1887 Gunning donation from Brazilian gold mine money.
