Meanwhile new methane seeps are discovered in the Ross Sea adding further concern about methanes increasing role in climate heating. More methane seeps will add more warming which adds more methane seeps. Adding to increasing climate heating. #moremethanemorewarming www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/5...
Scientists discovered something alarming seeping out from beneath the ocean around Antarctica
New seeps of methane are being discovered at an "astonishing rate," scientists have found.

NZ Govt decision to reduce the agriculture methane target ignores the science & will just add to cooking the planet & makes farming even more affected by extreme weather events. This is a lose-lose decision for the planet & NZ. #methanecookstheplanet #ClimateEmergency www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
Government lowers methane target, rules out methane taxes
The government is lowering its biogenic methane target for the next 25 years, a move opposed by the Greens and environmental activists.

A reminder that Solar power cuts electricity bills and carbon emissions, and NZ needs to scale up faster. ECO been a long supported of investment in solar power - the price just keeps dropping while gas cooks the climate & keeps getting more expensive. #InvestInSolar

Solar power cuts electricity bills and carbon emissions – NZ needs to scale up faster
Analysis: Scaling up installation could help reduce high consumer energy prices and meet New Zealand's emissions budgets.

Environment Ministry should comment on all Fast-Track project rather than staying silent. These are projects that the public cannot comment on, involve processes which over-ride normal environmental law & undermine conservation law. #MFEMIA www.rnz.co.nz/news/in-dept...
Environment Minister accused of staying silent on fast-track projects
National's Penny Simmonds has commented on only eight of the 43 fast track projects she has been sent invites for.

Sad to hear that Jane Goodall has died age 91. She supported environmental initiatives throughout the world including helping ECO and other environmental groups promote joint environmental action in NZ. A great loss for the environment and the planet.

It would depend on arrangements but would be expensive & result in more greenhouse gas emissions.

Quarry company can avoid public scrutiny by using Fast Track law to acquire conservation land managed by Wellington Regional Council. Another case of why the Fast Track law is bad law, ignores alternatives, & why land swaps are never simple. #repealthefasttrack www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
Quarry firm looks to acquire section of Belmont Regional Park in land swap
Winstone Aggregates is trying to acquire a 24 hectare block of regional park land adjacent to the quarry in exchange for three blocks of regenerated quarry land totalling 30 hectares.

Importing LNG is a path to a greater impact on the climate and much more expensive electricity. As well as establising a system that promotes new solar, batteries & other renewables, NZ needs invest more in energy efficiency and other measures to reduce electricity demand. #noneedforfossilgas

Over the last 30 years many orange roughy spawning areas have been wiped out due to over-fishing & the impact of bottom trawling. There are now examples where spawning only occurs in areas protected from bottom trawling or with little current fishing. Seamounts & other feature deserve protection.
econz.bsky.social
Big cuts to Chatham Rise orange roughy fisheries from 1 October are unlikely to be enough but the Minister has proposed looking at other issues including stopping bottom trawling on spawning areas.

Govt to restrict bottom trawling during orange roughy spawn
Allowable catch in the troubled East and South Chatham Rise fishery has been slashed by 88 percent.

A historic day for the high sea of the planet with the BBNJ Treaty reaching the 60 ratifications needed for it to come into force. Thanks to all those around the planet who worked for this day. NZ has signed but not ratified the treaty - still time before 17 Jan. #BBNJ @highseasalliance.bsky.social

Methane (CH₄) is a potent greenhouse gas. Here are the newest monthly mean observations... 🧪⚒️

May 2025 - 1933.54 ppb
May 2024 - 1925.71 ppb

Red colored line graph time series of global atmospheric methane abundance from January 1984 through May 2025. Methane abundance is measured in units of parts per billion. Current levels are 1934 ppb. A seasonal cycle is visible on the graph. There is also decadal variability and a long-term increasing trend.

This October, the IUCN will vote on Motion 032 at the World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi.

The motion calls for stronger protection of seamounts - a vital step ahead of the 2026 UN bottom fishing review.

Sale proceeds should be used to remediate damage done to rivers, and to help farmers shift away from intensive dairy to more plant-based regenerative organic farming — not more irrigation schemes and intensification.

NZ's biggest climate emitters in agriculture are now not reporting what they emit. This is a case of a Govt decision hiding the polluters. To be carbon neutral then we must report all emissions. Transparency is key to future action. #reportallgreenhouseemissions www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Three of New Zealand's biggest emitters no longer have to reveal their climate impact
It comes after the government ended compulsory reporting for the farming sector.

Climate action is multi-generational and needs to occur across many Governments. Pulling the plug on action just builds up costs for future governments and future generations. The future deserves more from this Government than ending climate action. #climateaction

This cuts include "from electric bus funds to agricultural emissions pricing to subsidies for solar and wind. Officials have been ordered to stop planning for lower car use. Climate scientists have lost their jobs. And this month, a ban on exploration for oil and gas was repealed."
