Scientist knew CO2 warms the atmosphere since 1859 as J.Tyndall experimentally demonstrated…or did he? Fact is 3yr earlier a #women in #STEM published her results w same findings, her name was Eunice Newton Foote & this is her nearly forgotten discovery: 🧪#AcademicSky 🎢

The glacier retreat allowed to find his rests lost in 1959; this's the story of @bas.ac.uk #Meteorologist Dennis "Tink" Bell. Ironically global warming is helping to acknowledge those who gave their lives to Polar exploration whose early research allows us a better understanding of the #Climate 🧪❄️🎢

DNA testing confirms human remains recovered from an Antarctic glacier are those of a British meteorologist who fell down a crevasse during an expedition in 1959.

Science needs to stay objective & factual, this @nature.com article #TimPalmer presents a compelling argument on why basic climate research is paramount. Avoid extremes of misleading arguments by political parties/ immoderate conclusion by @wwattribution.bsky.social like people is detrimental. 🧪 ❄️🎢🥼
Just how bad will climate change get? The only way to know is to fund basic research
Predictions of global warming are uncertain. That’s why we need to keep finding out how the climate system works.

Good that the issues with peer-review (PR) are trying to be tackled. However, schemes like distributed PR or journals requiring authors to take care of PR process before submitting are just passing the hurdle to authors while journals' APC contine to increase! How to understand that? #AcademicSky 🧪

Physicist John Archibald Wheeler was born #OTD in 1911.

A titan of 20th century science, he introduced the S-Matrix; developed (with Bohr) the first general theory of fission; coined "worm hole" and popularized “black hole”; and trained Feynman, Everett, Thorne, and many others. 🧪 ⚛️
Portrait of Wheeler in his twenties. He is wearing a dark jacket, white shirt, and tie. Wheeler is looking to the side of the camera. An older wheeler standing in front of a chalkboard. His hands are clasped. The diagram behind him shows a direct path from point A to point B labeled “classical,” and a wave emanating from A and passing to B labeled “quantum.” Wheeler walking with Einstein, Tomonaga, and a fourth person, through the woods near the Institute for Advanced Study.

Unlike many press coverage only focusing in fine tuning modeling results to support #AMOC collapse, this @nature.com article highlights scientist different hypothesis & theories on what could happen with the #AMOC in the future climate. Main point, we need observations, #science is lead by data. 🧪❄️🌊
Is a monster web of ocean currents headed for collapse? The race is on to find out

GOOD NEWS: the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation #AMOC isn't collapsing. 20 yrs of observations don't show any switching off signs & #climate models that show a collapse are based on UNREALISTIC amounts of melting fresh water into the system (likelihood <10% to happen by the end of 2100)🧪🌊
