My hope is that studios will have to eventually realize the long term money is in creative integrity and great work, and that work should be compensated and celebrated as much as any other aspect of film.
Instead, audience want things like Sinners, and Weapons, both loaded to the gills with terrific VFX.
But now, studios have hit the end of the road. Their production model no longer works. Audiences are bored, and now it’s quite obvious that generic blockbusters with generic visuals no longer draw crowds.
I literally had someone tell me to my face that the reason why Zodiac was so good was because they used practical blood effects. Well my carpal tunnel begs to differ, buddy.
So instead studios work hard to make audiences think “if you believe it it must’ve been practical.” And the fact that it was *real* makes it so much more *authentic* don’t you think?
Why do this? The answer is easy. if people knew what VFX artists did, those artists could paid what they deserve.

Studios hate that.
It used to be that places like ILM would be bigger stars than some of the cast – look at Jurassic Park. But now the studios will go so far as to add VFX backgrounds to the Barbie behind-the-scenes videos just so people continue to think that the sets were practical. .
On the other hand, if we’re having a great time because the movie is fantastic, then we probably don’t even notice the effects even when they are center stage.

Why don’t the studios celebrate the brilliance of VFX technicians then?
The only problem is that audiences associate the bad experience they are having with the most visible thing in it.

I can’t “see” the screenplay. But this movie sucks and I CAN see that garbage compositing.
In fact, if you are a hack, even if you get really good VFX people, you will probably just burn through their budget with redos trying to get the test audience scores higher on the screenplay you never should have greenlit in the first place.
Then you choose people to execute that movie who are good at their jobs - from the director to the VFX supervisor, and you give them as much time and money as you can to do it.

If you are a hack, you do the opposite, and get the opposite.
If you are an executive producer with taste who wants to make a good movie, you don’t start making that movie until you have a good screenplay.
It’s not surprising people associate bad movies and bad effects however, because the same thing that makes a movie good or bad IS the same thing that makes the VFX good or bad—

— and that’s whether the executive producers of the film are any good at their job.
If movies were bad due to bad visual effects, then the first Star Wars would be lousy because it looks jank as hell by today’s standards. Or Everything Everywhere all at Once for that matter, which uses its handmade jank as a plus.
So…if there’s anyone out there who thinks this…
I promise you movies are good or bad because of screenplays and direction.
It’s really amazing how well the studios have trained audiences to believe that “CG ruins movies,” and that if an effect is good, it must have been practical, and that’s the sign of a good movie - no CG.
