notable to see how obama — at roberts’s confirmation — saw what was ahead, as did most others who were paying attention

"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind Judge Roberts is qualified to sit on

the highest court in the land," Obama made clear. "The problem I had is that when I examined Judge Roberts's record and history of public service, it is my personal estimation that he has far more often used his formidable skills on behalf of the strong in opposition to the weak." He concluded, "The bottom line is this: I will be voting against John Roberts's nomination. I do so with considerable reticence. I hope that I am wrong."

Live performance of "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield in 1967. The song was written in 1966 in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in Los Angeles. It became an anthem for generational conflict, civil unrest, and later anti-war movements.

"The lyrics are still so relevant."

Turns out protest alone was never what changed things, it was protest *plus media coverage of protests*, which prompted officials to respond to protests, which increased public awareness of protests, etc.

If the protest happens & corporate media simply ignores it ... it's inert.

Six out of eight of the largest mass-movement protests in US history have happened since 2017. You wouldn't know this from most media reporting, and you sure af wouldn't know this from the way either major party has reacted.

The murders of the Venezuelan and Colombian fishermen are crimes against humanity. Can’t the people that ordered this and carried it out be prosecuted? Does the SC’s immunity ruling protect trump? I don’t want people who co-sign murder on the Supreme Court!

Colombian president says US military struck Colombian boat, killed his citizens
The last boat struck by the U.S. military in the Caribbean Sea was Colombian with Colombian citizens inside, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday.

Useful context on the House GOP's refusal to seat Rep. Grijalva. Once the election results are certified by the state—likely as early as Wednesday of next week—they have no legal basis to prevent her being sworn in.
gregdoucette.bsky.social
Once the results are certified by whatever state authority does it, yes

The statewide canvass is October 14th. I assume certification will be that day.

Rs aren't swearing Grijalva in early, which is shitty but not illegal. But there's nothing they can do once her results are certified

Machado's pro-Trump social post accepting the Peace Prize shows that she is apparently only pro-democracy in Venezuela and doesn't care that much about it anywhere else. Or alternatively, she is only against certain authoritarians and would prefer to pick her own. Ugly. Revealing.

Do they have a prize for blowing up boats in the Caribbean and then bragging that people who made their livelihood fishing there for generations are now afraid to go out on the water?

My quote of the day

We have managed to unite a country tearing down the barriers the regime built to divide us. Ours is a fight of a nation united against a criminal tyranny, in defense of its human rights, freedom, and democracy. That is why we have no alternative but victory

I did not realise that arms manufacturers sponsored the National Press Club until this story came out but jfc how compromised can you be
donnabenenson.bsky.social
"...the NPC’s list of sponsors reveals the problem. Among them are no less than ten firms with links to the arms industry that is profiting from Israel’s destruction of Gaza, including four of the very largest defence manufacturers in the world – BAE, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and Thales."

New:
Censorship by any other name.
The National Press Club cancelled a speaker, Chris Hedges, who planned to address the mass killing of journalists in Gaza. The mainstream press didn’t report it.

People keep saying that Trump is prosecuting his political enemies but that’s not what this is.

She’s not a political enemy, she’s a prosecutor who charged and tried a criminal. The criminal got away and now has the power to exact revenge. A mobster ordering a hit. That’s all this is!
stevenbeschloss.bsky.social
It’s hard to overstate how grotesque is the prosecution of Letitia James. I hope John Roberts—who unleashed this malignant, vengeful career criminal on our beloved country—is enjoying Trump’s utter abuse of power and trashing of justice and the rule of law.

"Anti-fascist" is the accurate term. No responsible person or media should be using the term "Antifa" - let alone capitalizing the word - when no such organization exists.
karlbode.com
you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

New in PN: Trump is the insurrection

"It’s a wild assault on state sovereignty, bringing us ever closer to the brink of civil war. This is despotism, & whatever chaos & violence is about to be unleashed lies squarely on the robed shoulders of Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, & Barrett."
Trump is the insurrection

If a president can unilaterally put people or groups on a list and kill them, there is no meaningful limit to his use of force.
