The issue isn't wages, it's working conditions & political leverage.

In a functioning democracy, workers have structural, strategic industrial leverage; H-1B can't wield that leverage because they're vulnerable to deportation—serious, scary threats of violence!

This keeps them docile, apolitical.

H1B workers are supposed to be people with qualifications that are in short supply in the United States. The unspoken part is that the "qualification" employers are so desperately searching for is usually the willingness to demean oneself for peanuts.

I live in Memphis, one of the cities where the National Guard’s been deployed. The ground troops aren’t here yet, but Blackhawks have been flying over for days. I’m from a military family — I know that deeper, heavier sound. It’s not like a LifeFlight helo.
