Yesterday the world lost one of its greatest Dickens scholars, Professor Michael Slater MBE. He was DF President 1988-1990 and Hon Editor of ‘The Dickensian’ 1958-1977, and wrote the definitive biography of CD. His warmth and wisdom will be sorely missed. RIP Michael.

A huge figure in Dickens Studies, his contribution to the field over the last half century is unsurpassed. @dickensfellowhq.bsky.social has lost a champion.

We enjoyed a fascinating talk by Professor Carolyn Oulton last night at Central DF, based on her research into the ‘Lushy’ Stepney Pickwick Club of the 1830s. Sadly the quality of the recording is poor, but it is now available on our website: www.dickensfellowship.org/index.php/ce...

RT from Ian Dickens, on X: ‘A Christmas Carol’ illustrator John Leech spent 3 months in Bonchurch in 1849. The pretty house he rented is now for sale at £825,000. In one of the bedrooms, Dickens successfully used his mesmerism skills after Leech suffered a head injury while swimming in rough seas.

Despite selling out our entire run in York, London sales for THE SIGNAL-MAN & THE TRIAL FOR MURDER are still a bit slow. We've got six showings between 31st October and 2nd November. A very classic Halloween treat, I'd argue - and in Charles Dickens's (probably definitely haunted) house!

No photos from this afternoon’s session as I was chairing (!), but it looks as if we’re about to hear a wonderful keynote lecture to round off Dickens Day 2025. Well done to all the speakers and organisers 👏👏👏
