Covering 🇺🇸🇲🇽US/Mexico news from Washington, DC.
US liberals writing articles about how magnificent Mexico is, glossing over the country’s own anti-democratic drift, just for the sake of ranting against Trump.

Please, stop.

NEW— Trump's tariffs by whim have left 40% of US imports fr/Mexico (tequila/fridges/beer) in bureaucratic "limbo". Before Mar 4, these products arrived under MFN "0% rate". Given that US tariff code doesnt stipulate USMCA special rate they are now subject to 25% tariff

NEW—

• At the Business Roundtable today, Trump boasted about how his tariff threats are ALREADY discouraging investment in🇲🇽Mexico, including in the auto sector.

• Trump again pointed to Honda's decision to build its Civic Hybrid in Indiana instead of Guanajuato.

•Mexico is mobilizing 10k troops to the US border as agreed w/Trump

•For decades, military mobilization has been sold to Mexicans as a cure vs drugs/violence only to discover that limited investigative capacities/prosecutions hamper success. Trump may soon learn this

TRUMP:

“(Sheinbaum) agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers  on the border…These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our country”

•Novice observers of Mexico would like to see in Prez Sheinbaum a righteous leader fighting a bully who ignores global legality

•Yet, as this post by @eliudtapia.bsky.social reminds us, Sheinbaum herself is using irregular means to implement changes undermining the independence of the Judiciary

In today’s @Reforma:

“Trump’s deportations: between show & fear”

When interviewed by Lauran Ingraham this week, DHS Secretary Noem responded “yes we can” when pressed if the Trump Administration could deport “15 million”

Yet, at the current pace it would take them 39 years

Yes, the 25% tariff will hit the Mexican economy hard.

But as evidenced by Mexico City's front pages, the inclusion of a line in Trump's EO talking about an "intolerable alliance" between the Mexican Govt & the cartels may have holed the relationship w/Sheinbaum below the waterline.

TRUMP’s JUSTIFICATION FOR TARIFFS ON MEXICO:

"The Mexican drug trafficking organizations have an intolerable alliance with the Govt of Mexico. The Govt of Mexico has afforded safe havens for the cartels...This alliance endangers the national security of the US"

🇲🇽MEXICO:

- Mexican Economy contracts 0.6% in Q4 2024
- Annual 2024 GDP growth: 1.3% (half the US's)

Grim outlook for President Sheinbaum as she confronts 🇺🇸Trump's tariffs threat.

Sheinbaum preemptively agreeing to Trump’s Remain in Mexico paints her in an opposite light to the anti-Trump champion that some US liberals would hope her to be.

To be credible, Latin America's anti-imperialist left should have lashed out (just as it does vs Trump's deportations) at Mexico's immigration control policies, such as when AMLO reimposed visas on Brazilians, Venezuelans, Ecuadorians & Peruvians at the request of the US.
January 27, 2025 at 6:45 PM
•The @StateDept says the US has already restarted the Remain in Mexico program

•Thanks to historic deal w/AMLO, 1st Trump Administration returned +77k non-Mexicans (Spanish speaking + Brazilians) between 2019/20

•On Thursday, US says it returned 2k to Mexico

The moment Trump imposes tariffs on Mexican beer, he will also be imposing them on barley from Idaho, Montana & North Dakota

Like many products in North America, "Mexican beer" (such as Modelo, Corona, Tecate) is a product built on both sides of the border

For many of the 4 million undocumented Mexicans living in the US, their only plan ahead of Trump’s deportation threat is their faith that the Virgin of Guadalupe will keep them safe.

Former Mexican President AMLO liked to play the nationalist while in office but that didn’t prevent him from quietly sharing with the US biometric data of migrants detained in Mexico’s detention centers & receiving millions of US funds for migration enforcement

Mexico’s President rhetoric may play well with a certain domestic crowd but it just doesn’t fly in US public debate.

Mexico’s autocratization process under President Sheinbaum cannot be absent from any analysis of 🇲🇽Mexico’s reaction to Trump’s tariff threat as it weakens the country’s economic position while alienating natural allies inside the 🇺🇸US & 🇨🇦Canada key to any successful negotiation.

The 🇲🇽Sheinbaum Govt hates to boast about it (& the 🇺🇸Trump camp likes to glance away) but Mexico is already arresting RECORD numbers of US-bound migrants since last December when Biden closed 2 railway crossing bridges after a peak in 🇺🇸🇲🇽 border encounters
