And yet, being Romanian, it was still a weird jumble of letters with vowels carrying a heavy load, something many already here would have been confused by. I learned from a Romanian soccer teammate how it should be pronounced, a way Jo's dad had never heard.

Well, aside from the Ellis Island part, my wife's family name *was* changed. It was Romanian, and when some members of the family came to Canada it either wasn't changed or else was only changed a little. When Jo's dad's family came it was changed enough that the pronunciation also changed.

Gentle reminder: I am seeing more "I cannot afford pet food" posts & if you might face this in the near future/now, I recommend checking your local area's subreddit and posting if anyone knows of local programs for pet food. Many areas have small under-the-radar charities that give out pet food.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
