In light of today’s news about the National Cancer Institute announcing a 4% payline, it’s really important to communicate to people that the previous 10% payline was still effectively a lottery and the result of decades of underfunding the NIH. Paylines used to be 25%.

PO just confirmed that our 5th percentile R01 is not getting funded. Past NCI Payline at 4 percent. Cant believe it.

🧪 BREAKING (good news): Senate subcommittee says NO! to Trump's proposed slashes to NASA & NSF funding.

Today, the subcommittee said to keep NASA + NSF funding at $33.9 billion, the same as in FY24.

See 7:15 below. Full Senate appropriations committee meets tomorrow about it.

Importantly, we show that sEcad remodels the brain microenvironment by promoting reactive astrocytes through the CXCL1–CXCR2 axis; blocking this pathway reduced brain metastasis burden and prolonged mouse survival.
Using novel IBC brain metastasis models, we show that sEcad drives brain metastasis by impacting multiple steps of the metastatic cascade, including invasion, anoikis resistance, endothelial adhesion, and BBB transmigration.
We describe novel tumor cell-intrinsic and - extrinsic mechanisms by which soluble E-cadherin (sEcad) promotes brain metastatic growth in aggressive breast cancers. Serum sEcad levels are correlated with increased development of brain metastasis and death in breast cancer patients.

The massive funding cuts Trump and DOGE have made to scientific research should concern everyone; they will stifle American innovation and reduce economic growth.

Researchers found that "a 50 percent reduction in funding would lower [GDP] nearly 7.6 percent" and cause permanent economic damage:
