To close our affordability series, I wrote about captive pricing.
If you're at the ballpark or the movie theater and have no choices for concessions, they've got you.
But it's more widespread than that: ambulances, auto sales, airports, anesthesia... it's becoming inescapable.
Trapped at the Concession Stand - The American Prospect
Captive pricing follows when customers have no choices. Policymakers can do something about it.

State Department to deny visas to fact checkers and others, citing 'censorship'
The order is focused on applicants for H-1B visas, which are frequently used by tech companies and is part of a campaign by the Trump administration against online content moderation.

"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

Separating TCM from the library acquired to program it (and other Turner nets) is worrisome, because TCM itself owns no films.

A creative/licensing relationship may remain w/ Warner Bros., as was the plan when the WBD split was announced, but even that won't provide a longterm path forward. #WBD
I just heard from someone at Netflix. TCM is apparently going with the other linear networks to Discovery Global.

Here is the official comment on what WBD assets will be acquired by Netflix:

"We are acquiring the film and television studios, HBO and HBO Max."

It feels now like this season's Oscars are, more than anything, an Irish wake for the Warner Bros. that put out "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another"—big, bold, awards-worthy movies that audiences loved seeing in theaters—and then got gobbled up by Netflix.

I'm loath to believe crooks currently heading the FBI that the Biden admin slow walked solving the DC party HQ bombing suspect case. But we should know why it took this long from someone who was there, and soon. If the answer is "we were focused on Trump" I'm gonna throw some ketchup my damn self.

The window even for their biggest hits is already just weeks, if you count VOD rentals.

Existential threat to movies in theaters. Soon it'll be luxury only, and a few scrappy arthouses. Exurbs and rural areas are screwed, especially if they have no broadband.

Sorry but current subscribers to either service who think they're going to get everything on the other as a free upgrade are in for bitter tears.

This didn't happen when Disney bought Fox/Hulu, or when Paramount acquired Showtime. It ain't gonna happen here either.
i don’t understand why people are upset the Netflix acquisition of WB will mean the end of HBO Max. how many of you are happy you have to pay double for two apps to watch things you like.

there’s things to dislike about this, but that ain’t it.

There’s also something especially crazy-making about SCOTUS’s “eagerness to playact a district court” (Kagan) in a *shadow docket* decision that doesn’t really engage with the facts at all. The gap between the professionalism of the district courts and SCOTUS’s arbitrariness couldn’t be more obvious
There are so many things wrong with this ruling, including the total disregard for the clear error standard. But what really gets me is the notion that legislatures can evade judicial review of their maps simply by passing them as close as possible to Election Day
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

The three Democratic appointees, in an opinion by Justice Kagan, dissent.

It is simply impossible to believe on this record that this would have been the lineup (or a stay issued at all) if the district court had found a racial gerrymander in a large blue state.

It's good—very good, and very important—that district courts keep issuing these 100-page rulings upholding the law. It must be incredibly dispiriting to see them overturned in a two-page, lawless, unsigned order, but please, keep them coming. They expose SCOTUS' corruption like nothing else.

What's changed is that the Court has become more transparent in its corruption. There's not even an argument here beyond the implicit one which is: how do you expect us to hold the House without those seats?

No, it's not good, but this info's been available online for ages, and it only tends to shock people who were unaware of it before. I can even find old addresses and phone numbers for myself.
NEW: Elon Musk's Grok chatbot will, with minimal prompting, provide residential addresses of everyday Americans.

Prompts as simple as "[name] address" immediately returned accurate home addresses of private citizens — alongside other personal info we didn't ask for.
