Just speculation- lots of the NZ varieties are also sold in Australia and elsewhere. From a marketing point of view they may be better recognized as tea-tree than Mānuka.

One of the greatest regrets of my life was not removing the ladder while Lee Vandervis was up on a building verandah putting a billboard of himself up, early one morning on Princes Street.
In hindsight it would have been worth my job.
