George "Harmonica" Smith
Born: April 22, 1924, Helena, Arkansas Died: October 2, 1983, Los Angeles
Instruments: Harmonica
Smith spent two brief stints (1954 and 1966/67) in the Muddy Waters band. He worked as a leader and sideman, in Chicago and Kansas City before moving to California in the fifties. On his own, Smith recorded for RPM, J&M, Sotoplay, Mercury, Blues Way, Vanguard, and other labels. He worked as a sideman on recordings by Otis Spann, Jack Dupree, Mama Thornton, and Eddie Taylor. Smith continued to tour internationally until his death from heart disease. He spent his later years working with young musicians.
One was particularly impacted by Smith; Rod Piazza has written a tribute song for the Helena native.
